My frown deepened. She was one of the cat shifters pretty high up in the hierarchy back home.

“She told me you’ve been getting very cozy with the alpha.”

I narrowed my eyes at him. “You sent one of our own tospyon me!?”

“I sent someone to look out for you,” Colter corrected. “After Mykel told me you had to get close to Bishop to find out what was going on. He doesn’t have a good reputation, you know that. I was worried.”

“You sent me here because I can handle myself,” I snapped and set down the half-eaten cup of yogurt. I’d lost my appetite.

“And you can.”

“Obviously, you don’t think so.”

“Look, don’t be mad at me. We all know Bishop is merciless, and after Turk disappeared and you struggled so much to find a trail, I had to dosomething. You’re too stubborn to let it go when I tell you to come home, and you’re too fucking important for me to let something happen to you.”

His speech was somewhat flattering. Colter had always cared. I was still pissed off, though. How could he do that to me? How could he treat me like I didn’t know what the hell I was doing?

“Turk isn’t missing,” I said.

Colter frowned. “What do you mean?”

“I mean, Bishop saw him just the other night. Something else is up.”

Colter shook his head. “That doesn’t make any sense.”

It didn’t, but I was too irritated with Colter right now to try to figure this out with him. He could go away, and I could cool down, and then maybe I would think more clearly about what I’d learned at Bishop’s place before my attraction to him had taken over.

“Well, I’m fine,” I said. “You’ve seen it with your own eyes, so you and Nina can both go back home and let me finish what I started.”

Colter shook his head. “I didn’t just come to see with my own eyes that you’re okay. I’m here to pull you out myself.”

“What?!”

“You’re coming home with me.”

“I’m not,” I said.

“You said yourself he’s not missing, so there’s no reason for you to stay.” Colter’s expression was hard.

He was stubborn.

I was more stubborn.

“I’m not leaving until I know what’s going on.”

“Is that really what this is about?” Colter asked. “Or are you not leaving because you’re so caught up in him, you can’t think clearly anymore?”

Anger flashed through my body, and for a moment, I saw red.

“Honestly, Colter, who and what I do with my time is none of your business.”

“It is if it’s Bishop!” Colter hissed.

“What’s so bad about him?”

“His wholefamilyhas a history with dark magic. After Lazlo and the vampires, you should know better than to get tangled up with that.”

“That’s not who Bishop is,” I said in his defense. “His dad fucked up, but that doesn’t mean he did. Come on, you know that you’re not who your father was in any way if you choose to be different.”
