“I need your help to destroy it,” I urged when she wouldn’t answer me. “I can’t do it by myself. I tried.”

“Youwhat?!”

Did she not understand the part where I’d said I needed revenge on my dad?

“If you destroy that thing, it will kill you.” Autumn’s voice was thin. “You can’t mess with magic like that. The magic that was taken from others was put in that amulet by dark magic.”

Shit. “I can’t destroy it?”

“Not unless you’re willing to die, too.”

“So, what am I supposed to do now?”

“Get rid of it.”

“I can’t. He’ll find it if I do and just take it back. It won’t do anything.”

“Oaklee, revenge isn’t worth it. It shouldn’t cost you your life.”

“I’m not letting him have this back,” I said coldly. “He doesn’t deserve it, and the power that’s in here shouldn’t belong to him.Especiallyif you say it’s stolen.” I still didn’t know what that meant. “I used a spell your mom taught me to hide it, and I’m hiding myself, too, so my dad can’t find me or the amulet.”

Autumn frowned. “How did you do the spell?”

“Why?”

“Just tell me what you did,” Autumn mumbled.

I explained to her exactly how Augusta had taught me to do it.

Autumn pressed her fingers to her forehead and traced her hairline in thought. “It’s not right.”

“What?” I asked, a new dread curling in my stomach. “I did it wrong? Am I not safe?!”

“No, you did it right, but the magic…” She reached for me and touched me. Her face paled when she did. “The veil is cracked. Something or someone’s power shook your spell, and you’re not completely hidden.”

“How can that be?” I asked.

Autumn still rubbed her head, other hand on her hip, like she tried to balance herself out, steadying her warring thoughts.

“I don’t know. It shouldn’t be like that. We’ll do it together until we can figure out how you’re getting rid of that amulet.”

“I don’t just want to get rid of it,” I argued.

“I’m not helping you destroy it,” Autumn said. “But let’s keep you safe, first.” She held out her hands, and I put mine in hers. I closed my eyes, and together, we chanted the words that put the spell into place. Her magic sighed against my skin like a warm breeze, and the room filled with the scent of rosemary and sage, even though there was no incense or burning herbs.

Finally, Autumn opened her eyes and let go of me.

“It will last as long as you don’t do what you did for it to get broken in the first place.”

“I don’t know what I did!”

“Just be careful,” Autumn warned. “And put that thing away, Oaklee. You have no idea how dangerous it is. You have no idea what you’ve done.”

My blood ran cold when she said it. I knew what I’d done, but she seemed to think there was more to it. The power in the amulet had been stolen—was that what she meant? How was that possible?

“You should go now,” Autumn said tightly.

“I want to ask you some questions—”
