“I took care of that part, too. I’m making sure I’m safe.”

“How?” Nadia asked again.

“I got a job at Sapphire.”

Nadia’s eyes widened. “Excuse me, what?”

“You know, the club that Ja—”

“I know what it is, Oak,” Nadia said. “Oh shit. Are you a dancer? You definitely have the body for it.”

“No, no, it’s a secretarial position, but the fact that the alpha owns it—”

“Is what’s going to get you killed,” Nadia said.

I shook my head. “Not if I play my cards right. My dad will never come after me there. Jameson will kill him before he gets to me, and he knows that. It’s the second part of my life insurance plan.”

“What if Jameson kills you?” Nadia asked, lowering her voice.

I’d thought about that, too. Jamesonhatedmy dad. My dad had done something terrible to him, but I didn’t know what it was. I just knew that the two of them used to be close, and now they hated each other’s guts. Jameson was dangerous, but hiding at his club and being a part of his pack again would mean protection from my dad while I figured out how to destroy the stupid amulet once and for all.

I just had to make sure Jameson didn’t actually figure out who I was.

Nadia shook her head, her face riddled with concern. “This isn’t nearly the reunion I was hoping for.”

“I know,” I sighed. “You’re the only one I can trust.”

“We used to be kids together, carefree.”

“We had to grow up at some point, Nadia.”

“I grew up, too, but you don’t see me running from psychopathic killers and hiding with dangerous alphas.”

“That’s because your dad is a nice guy,” I pointed out.

Nadia shook her head. She was struggling to take it all in.

“There has to be another way to get back at your dad,” Nadia said. “I don’t see why you had to take something of his.”

I was getting irritated. “I know you don’t get it, and I don’t expect you to understand. You weren’t there. If you have nothing left to lose—”

“You still have your life,” Nadia cut me off.

“I’m not going to do anything stupid,” I said.

“You already did,” Nadia deadpanned.

I shrugged it off.

Nadia narrowed her eyes at me. “You’re just going to piss him off, and he’s dangerous when he’s pissed off.”

Was she talking about Jameson? Or my dad? I guess that statement could work for both of them.

“Apparently, so am I.”

Nadia looked away, and I could tell she didn’t agree.

That was fine. She didn’t know what it had been like living with my dad, fighting for survival every day. She hadn’t ever had to hide out to save herself, and she hadn’t had to count down every second until she could finally gain her freedom.
