“Are you okay?” he asked.

He picked up on my emotions just as I’d picked up on his.

“I just… can’t believe that someone would do something like that.”

“I know.” Jameson clenched his hands into fists. “I can’t get over it. I can’t just move on. My sister is dead, killed by a man I once trusted, and I won’t rest until I get my revenge.”

Well, in that regard, the feeling was mutual. I wanted revenge on my dad, too. It wasn’t nearly as serious as what had happened to Jameson, though. Knowing my dad had taken my money and forced me to live a life of fear had been bad, but I was still alive.

Shit.

Jameson had every right to hate my dad with the passion he did. My dad had been a horrible person, stealing magic, killing people to increase his own power. The amulet I’d taken away from him was right there, down the ladder and under the floorboards.

“If I ever find him,” Jameson growled, “I’ll make him pay. I’ll hurt everyone he loves. If he has a family, they’re fucked.”

“Jameson,” I choked out.

“I know it sounds harsh, but it’s a dog-eat-dog world, and I want him to hurt the way he hurt me. Everyone has someone they love, something they’re not willing to lose.”

The amulet. My dad didn’t give a shit about me, the only thing he would care to lose was that amulet.

“I want him to understand what it feels like to have everything ripped away from him,” Jameson continued. “Tate Armstrong fucked with my family, and he’s nothing but a dead man walking.”

I tried to swallow my horror, my fear.Iwas Tate’s family. I was the thing that Jameson would rip away.

“Do you know where he’s hiding?” I asked.

Jameson shook his head and spoke through gritted teeth. “He’s done something magical to hide himself, so I stopped searching after a while. I can’t forget about my pack in a quest for personal vengeance.”

I nodded, relief flooding me. At least I wasn’t in danger yet.

“It’s going to happen soon,” Jameson said when I didn’t speak, filling the silence.

“What do you mean?” I asked, my mind spinning. “Do you know where he is now?”

“No, but his people are back in town, and it’s just a matter of time before he’ll follow.”

My blood turned to ice.

“He’s what?” I tried not to sound as panicked as I felt.

“If he shows his face again, all hell will break loose. This isn’t a matter ofifit will happen, butwhen.I’msoready for him to show his face again, the cowardly motherfucker.”

He continued cussing my dad out, but I struggled to listen. I tasted my heart in my throat, and blood rushed in my ears.

My dad washere? That meant he’d come for me. He was here to find me, to find the amulet. He was here to kill me, probably.

If Jameson ever found out who I was, Tate wouldn’t be the only dead man walking. I was on very thin ice, too.

I could tell myself over and over again that it wouldn’t happen that way—Jameson would never hurt me. The truth was, I didn’t know that for a fact. We were bound by a mate bond that didn’t just happen between any two shifters, but just because we were fated didn’t mean anything. This wasn’t the happily ever after I’d wished for.

Wewerefated.

Fated… or doomed.
