“I don’t know if that’s a good idea,” she said. “I need to talk to you—”

My phone rang, cutting her off. When I took it out of my pocket, Felix’s name showed on the caller ID.

“I’ve got one of them,” he said. “I’m at your place.”

Shit.

“I’ll be right there.”

I ended the call.

“What’s wrong?” Oaklee asked.

I wasn’t going to draw her into this—it was going to get ugly, and there was no need for Oaklee to know about this shit. It was between Tate and me and the ugliness that came with what he’d done would die with him when I finally got my hands on him. The man Felix had just rounded up would help me with that.

“It’s pack business,” I said. “Felix needs help with something.” I planted a kiss on Oaklee’s mouth before I stood. “Think about what I said. I want you by my side.”

She pursed her lips, but she nodded and walked me to the door, letting me out. I heard her bolt the door behind me.

Good, she was keeping herself safe. As soon as I took care of this bullshit, I was going to get her out of this shitty neighborhood and in my place with me, where she belonged. We both knew where this was headed.

It was pointless fighting facts.

I got in my car and sped toward my place.

Felix had access to the mansion, and I’d given him access to the stronghold beneath it, too.

I parked in the driveway, and Felix met me at the door.

“Is he secure?” I asked.

“Yeah,” Felix said. He sniffed the air and narrowed his eyes. “Where were you?” he asked.

“What?”

“I needed you here when I brought him in.”

“Looks like you did a fine job on your own.”

“Yeah… were you with Oaklee?”

“None of your fucking business,” I growled.

What was his problem? Was it really that tough for everyone to believe that I could fall in love, that I could have a mate? I’d sworn it off because of Delaney, but hell, I was part human just like everyone else, and my heart still beat, even though I felt dead on the inside sometimes.

We walked toward the back of the mansion where metal stairs led underground into a bunker with reinforced steel in the concrete all around it.

I had cells down here that no shifter could get out of. A few of the cells used to be hexed by fae who used to work for my father, but I hadn’t used the cells in a long time, and keeping in other magical creatures wasn’t necessary. My dad had ruled through fear, taken shortcuts, and done things that I didn’t want to know or speak about.

I wasn’t that alpha.

This bunker wasn’t for torture, the way my dad had had it. I used it to lock up those who tried to kill me. My dad’s legacy somehow still reigned, and everyone thought I got off when I made shifters fight, but none of that had happened since my dad had passed away.

The cells were all empty save for the last one, where the large metal door was firmly in place.

Behind it, I heard a shifter pacing in human form.

The door had dents in it.
