“I’m going to get that amulet out of here, and I’m going to run until I can destroy it,” I said. “I should have done that from the start.”

Nadia sat on the bed. “You can’t keep running. Why can’t you just let your dad have his amulet and be done with it?”

“Because hestoleother shifters’ magic and put it in that thing, Nadia,” I said. “He killed for the magic, and if he uses it, he’ll be strong enough to get rid of anyone, even Jameson.”

“He wouldn’t,” Nadia said, but her voice wasn’t as sure as I figured she wanted it to sound.

“Tate is power hungry. He always was. Hiding out in Montana was a blow to his ego. I didn’t know what he was doing back then, killing others to get stronger, but I should have known that he wouldn’t stay down forever. It’s not how he is. He got involved in Jameson’s family for a reason.”

When Nadia frowned, I told her what Jameson had told me. I’d felt so betrayed when I’d heard that my dad had been like part of the family at Jameson’s place, but Dad didn’t give a shit about family. All he’d wanted was power, and he’d gotten it.

“How do you know he’ll want to take over?” Nadia asked.

“I don’t know, but it’s not a far stretch. The fae told me that amulet holds a lot of power, and if Tate had something against Jameson, coming here to get it and becoming alpha would be killing two birds with one stone.”

“Your dad sounds like a total dick,” Nadia said.

“You have no idea,” I sighed.

A loud crash in the living room made us both jump up.

“Danny!” Nadia shouted, and she ran out of the room.

I followed, and we skidded to a halt. Tate stood in the small apartment living room, with two of his buddies by his side.

He grinned slyly at me.

“Hello, pumpkin.”

The living room had been turned on its head, and Danny lay in a corner, blood coming from his nose and his temple.

“Danny, no, no,” Nadia shrieked and ran to him. She fell to her knees.

“Leave them alone,” I ordered.

“I’m not here for them,” my dad said with a wave of his hand. “I’m here for you. Come on, let’s have it.”

“What?” I asked.

Dad rolled his eyes. He waved a hand, and one of his friends stepped toward Danny, a gun pointed at his head. Nadia screamed and tried to curl her body around him.

“It doesn’t matter which one of you I shoot,” the gunman said in a raspy voice.

“That’s low for a shifter,” I said, trying to keep calm. “I thought you would use magic, rather than a pathetic human weapon.”

Dad snorted. “Using magic for no good reason is foolish. Why do the work when the humans already laid the groundwork? Give it to me, Oaklee,” he demanded, his voice hard. “I’m not here to play games.”

“I don’t know where it is,” I said.

My dad laughed, but it didn’t reach his eyes. “You’re your mother’s child, you know that? So fucking full ofshit.” His smile turned into a scowl. “Give it to me, or your friends die.”

“You’ll have to catch me first.”

“You know we can.”

“You never could before.” I ran out of the house, hoping they would follow and leave Nadia and Danny alone. I braced myself for the sound of a gunshot, but instead, I heard the roar of a bear. When I looked over my shoulder, my dad’s friend was hot on my heels. He’d roared like a bear, but he was still in human form. He was already chasing a young woman through the city—shifting into a bear would just draw more unwanted attention.

I was fast, but he was faster.
