“Come in,” I say louder than normal so the person can hear me on the other side. The door slowly opens and Cassie peeks her head in.

“Are you busy?” she asks.

“On the phone with Stella,” I tell her, waving her in.

“Oh, perfect.” She walks into the room and closes the door behind her.

“Stell, I’m putting you on speaker. Cass is here,” I tell her and click the button on my phone and pull the buds out of my ears.

“Hey, girl,” Cass says.

“Did you hear? Cole Reed is in town,” Stella gushes. I roll my eyes.

“Oh my gosh. Yes! That’s why I’m here.” Cassie plops into the chair facing my desk and claps her hands in front of her chest in excitement. “I saw him! I saw him!”

My eyes budge as I sit up straight. “What?” I ask as Stella gasps.

“Is he hot?” Stella asks.

“Guuurl. He looks so good. He aged well.” Joy bubbles in her laugh as she fans herself.

“Stop it,” I mutter.

“No, for real, you know I think Theo is the sexiest grump in the world. But Cole, he’s all smiles and carefree and hella hot.”

“That doesn’t matter,” I tell them, trying to get that out of my head.

“Yes, it does,” they both say in unison.

“Do you know why he is here? Did you see him here at HEA?” I ask, trying to sound more cool, calm, and collected than I feel.

Cassie smirks. She knows I’m blowing smoke. But she ignores it.

Shaking her head, she shares what she knows. “Ruth had him up here. Meeting with him in her office.”

My mouth falls open. We never bring clients up here.

Cassie continues. “You’ll never guess this, though. Cole, he’s Dorthy Jenkins grandson.” She lets that settle, a proud smile on her face.

“What?” I gasp.

“Who?” Stella asks.

“Dorthy Jenkins, Ruth’s best friend. She lives in New York City.” My brows dip as I take in this new development.

I throw myself back into my seat. Wow. This is madness. Ruth has known Cole this whole time?

“I’ve not met Dorthy, but if she’s besties with Ruth, I’m sure she’s fascinating,” Stella says.

“I’ve not met the woman either, but Ruth has so many stories,” Cassie shares.

I feel Cassie’s eyes on me. I sit up and compose myself. Cassie opens her mouth to say something, but Stella lets out a whistle over the line.

“I just Googled him. Found everything we need to know, ladies.” She sounds proud.

“Hit me.” I sigh. Why do I even care this much?

“Looks like Mr. Reed has been doing well for himself. He opened the Indianapolis division of RRG just over six months ago. He owns LACE and FIRE, right there on Mass Ave. Oh! And they just opened SHINE over at that Iron hotel,” she tells us.
