He just grins and stares at me.

Trying not to squirm under his gaze, I let out a tiny frustrated growl. “Okay, fine. We can catch up. Later. Not right now, though.”

“That’s all I ask. Tonight. Seven.”

“I’m busy. I’ll let you know when.”

His brow dips and his mouth opens, but I jump back in.

“I’ve only got so much time right now, Cole. I need to ask you some questions.”

Leaning back, he tosses up his hands. “All right, let’s hear them.”

I clear my throat and stare down at my notes. Then remember what I’m about to ask him and decide that this is by far the worst day I’ve had in a while.

“This set of questions gives us a starting point when it comes to what you believe your type of woman is. Well, I should pause here. I guess I just assumed… women, correct? You’re still into women?” I bite the inside of my cheek.

His answering tone is full of humor. “Very much so. Thanks for checking. Go on.”

“What type of woman are you typically drawn to?”

“Successful, independent, the fun-loving kind but knows how to take control of a room.”

I nod, refusing to look at him. “Would you say that you are drawn to a certain look?”

“I would say that looks don’t particularly matter to me, but there is one type I’ve always been more drawn to,” he says.

“And that is…” I draw out, waiting for him to reply.

“Brunette, hazel eyes, between five-four and five-seven, glows when she smiles. Don’t find that often, but when I find it, it most definitely piques my attention.”

I roll my eyes then finally look at him. “Really?”

“Very much so. Met a woman a decade ago that fit that description perfectly and the look just kinda stuck. It settled under my skin.”

“Sounds itchy. Maybe get that checked out,” I mutter.

He barks out a laugh.

“How can I get you to take this serious, Cole?” I nearly plead.

“I just wanted to know if you’re in a relationship,” he says softly, leaning toward me.

“My goodness. Fine. No. I am not in a relationship. Happy?” I huff.

“Very. Now was that so difficult?” he asks.

“Yes, this whole thing was difficult.”

“Meet me for dinner. Any night this week. Any time. I’ll be there,” he asks again.

Just as I start to tell him no, there is a knock on the door. It slides open and Ruth fills the doorway.

“Cole, I’m so glad I’ve caught you! I thought I would stop by and see how everything is going.” She doesn’t come all the way into the room, which is fine. It was getting a little hot in here anyway.

“It’s going smashingly, Ms. Ruth. Though I’m finding it very hard to catch up with Layla. She’s very professional,” he tells her. I glare at him then shake my head.

“Layla is always the utmost professional when it comes to her job. Though, between you and me, I wish she let loose a little here and there.” Her conspiring tone and his chuckle have my mouth popping open in protest.
