Two minutes till, she replies to my earlier text, letting me know she’s here. I told her to come through the restaurant side of the building, so I head downstairs to intercept her.

Moments later, I’ve finally got eyes on her and my breath nearly catches in my throat. She’s utterly gorgeous in what she’s wearing and I’m not sure how I’m going to keep my promise to behave. The black skinny pants and a black top that looks like it’s a mix between a blouse and a blazer due to the cuffed mid-length selves give off I’m the boss vibes, making her all the more sexy. She hasn’t seen me yet, so I allow my eyes to rake down her body. I smile at the fact that she wears a pair of purple slipper-looking flats. There’s her flair.

I don’t want to waste any more time. I want as much time with her as possible and admiring her from afar just isn’t going to cut it.

I close the distance between us. “Lays.”

Her smile assaults me, a punch straight to the gut, sending my heart rate into a blizzard of excitement. “Cole.”

I reach out, gently placing my hand on her elbow, and motion to the way I just came. “You came.”

She scoffs. “You didn’t think I would?”

“I think you may be scared to be alone with me,” I tell her. She glances up at me, a sexy little glare aimed my way.

I nod to Travis as he catches my eye from the open kitchen window. He waggles his brows when he notices Layla.

“I am not scared. I just take my job very seriously and you, well, don’t,” she says.

We make it down the back hall and up the stairs while I just chuckle and ask her about her day.

“It was busy, but I was able to run home and let Pepper outside.”

“And Pepper is…” I ask as I use the fob to unlock the door at the top of the stairs, letting us into the RRG offices.

“My dog.” She snorts. “Who else would I need to let outside?”

“Honestly, you can never be sure these days. What kind of dog?” I ask her as we walk to my office.

“Aussie.”

“Those are fun. I love dogs.” I grin down at her as I usher her into my office. I take a seat on the couch, hoping to keep this informal.

She takes a seat as well, leaving a lot of space between us. Fair enough. At least she isn’t requesting the small conference table on the other side of my office.

“Of course you love dogs.” She laughs.

“What does that mean?” I question, letting the sound of her voice wash over me.

“You’re high energy, so you would one hundred percent be a dog person. But also, I’m pretty sure I could have said Pepper was any animal and you would have told me you loved it.” Her eyebrow rises in challenge.

I raise my hands in defeat. “I will neither confirm nor deny. But it is a bad thing to find common ground?”

“No, but if you lie about your interests, it will probably come back to bite you in the ass before too long,” she says, reaching into her large purse and pulling out a tablet.

“Maybe. But I do love dogs. So I clearly check off one of your boxes.”

She rolls her eyes, but she’s smiling. “My boxes are uncheckable by you.”

I smirk. “Challenge accepted. Let me at your box and I’ll prove you wrong.”

Her cheeks redden. “Oh my Gosh. Cole. You said you would behave.”

I can’t help the stupid grin on my face. She’s so much fun. “I am. I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

She sighs as she swipes across her screen. “Hang on a minute. Polly’s notes just came through before I left and I haven’t had a chance to read through them.”

I fight off a glare at the thought of Polly. That woman had it out for me, but I won’t mention that to Layla. I don’t know what kind of boss Layla is, but I would guess she’s fair but a take no bullshit type.
