I get several steps out of LACE then gulp in the chilly night air.

Ohmygod. Ohmygod. What have I done?

My phone pings in my purse and I pull it out, hoping for a reprieve from the massive mistake I just made.

Cassie:

Totally last minute but Stella and I are at Ball and Biscuit. Join us?

Me:

Sure. Meeting just finished, be there in five.

I opt to walk the few blocks since the old bar is here on Mass Ave. That should give me enough time to pull myself together.

“It was just a kiss,” I mutter to myself.

We got caught up in the moment. That’s it.

Harmless.

It really was a harmless kiss. A little tongue action is hardly scandalous.

Right?Right.

I shake my head, letting out a deep breath. I’m about to be in the presence of the two women who know me the best. If I don’t have myself under control in the next four minutes, they are going to read my distress the minute they lay eyes on me.

Then again, I could just tell them everything that just happened and get their take on it.

Let’s just see if I can muster the courage to admit to them that I messed up big time with a client.

The night is chilly, so I don’t give myself another second to gather my wits before heading into the old-school bar and finding Stella and Cassie.

I find them near the edge of the room at a table that is a one-sided booth. Cassie, on the booth side, spots me first as I waste no time shucking off my jacket and hanging it on the back of the chair next to where Stella sits.

“Layla! I’m so happy you made it!” Cassie beams.

I smile down at my best friend. “Me too. What a day.”

“Hey, lady,” Stella says, bumping into my shoulder with a smile.

I take a breath because I just realized that through my mental freak-out on the way over, I power walked and now I’m out of breath.

“It’s like you ran here,” Stella says.

I laugh.

“She probably did. She just met with Cole. How’d that go?” Cassie grins, the straw of her drink between her teeth. All right, so we are doing this right now.

My groan elicits giggles and I cover my forehead with my hand, figuring out where I want to go with this.

“Oh, that well, eh?” Stella asks. “You know, I don’t know why you just don’t date him yourself.”

“Ohhh.” I hear Cassie as she wiggles closer to the table.

“No. That can’t happen,” I tell them.

Disappointment laces Stella’s tone when she asks, “What, why not? Does he still have lusty eyes for you?”
