I shake my head. “I was summoned to brunch this morning with Cole. I didn’t go.”

Both women gasp in horror.

I actually chuckle this time. “She will get over it. I’m not ready to face her yet.”

“The longer you ignore her, the madder she will get,” Cassie offers.

“Maybe,” I mutter.

“So are you gonna answer that text?” Stella asks.

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because it’s probably Cole and I don’t want to talk to him either,” I tell her.

“What does he want? To confess his undying love for you? I bet he does. That man loves you.”

I roll my eyes at her this time. “No, he doesn’t. It was just good sex.”

“I think you used the term ‘fantastic’ earlier,” Cassie chimes in. But then she’s lightning quick, crawls across the bed, leans over me, and snags my phone off the nightstand where I tossed it when they arrived.

“Hey. No,” I whine.

Cassie tosses it to Stella and she thankfully catches it. Swipes at it to read the notification.

“It’s from Cole. He says he really needs to talk to you, that he’s about to come over.”

“Nooooo,” I whine and I’m not proud of it, but I can’t possibly see him right now.

“So I should tell him to stop on by?” she jokes.

“Tell him now’s not a good time.”

“And when he balks at that?” she challenges.

“Tell him now’s not a good time. I’ve got company but will call him when I’m ready to talk.” I need time to reinforce those walls I built against him. If I see him now, I know he will see through the flimsy paper walls I’ve got up.

“Then don’t reply. Put him on mute,” I add. Which is something I should have done already. But I guess it saved me from an unexpected visit from the man.

Stella holds my phone and relates the text. A fleeting thought crosses my mind that she might be typing something totally different and he’s still going to show up here. But she tosses the phone back onto the bed and I waste no time snagging it out of the mess of covers and pull up the exchange.

Phew. She typed exactly what I wanted her to. I don’t wait for his response and put my phone back on my nightstand.

“I say this calls for a binge session,” Cassie announces, crawling off my bed. Stella stands as well.

“Heck yeah. I want some action. Can we please do action and not romance?”

“I hate romance,” I offer.

Cassie squeaks. “What? No, you don’t. You’re a matchmaker.” She points at Stella. “You stop it, Grinch.” Stella just wags her brows at her as she walks over to me, holds her hands out, and as I grab them, she hauls me out of my warm cocoon of sadness and tears.

“What did you have in mind?” I ask as we leave my dark room.

“Hmm. Well, I’m thinking of eitherNight AgentorThe Recruit,” Stella says over her shoulder.

“Aren’t they the same show?” Cassie asks.
