“Could Sowers keep up with a thousand-dollar-a-day coke habit from what y’all bring in at your firm?”

“He’s not hurting for cash,” she said. “We all do very well. His drug problem isn’t really a secret around the office. His behavior can be unstable, but it hasn’t ever affected his work or time in court, so I figure it’s none of my business what he puts up his nose. What I have to figure out now is if whatever you drag up on him is going to make the firm look bad enough that I should cut ties.”

“Compassion doesn’t seem to be one of your strong suits,” Jack said.

“Compassion and lawyer don’t really go together,” she said, rolling her eyes. “At least not if you want to be rich. And I do. Are we done here?”

“For now,” Jack said. “Unless Detective Cole has any more questions.”

“Oh, not today, sheriff,” Cole said. “But I sure look forward to questioning Miss Taylor again soon.”

Jasmine didn’t bother to acknowledge his comment. Instead she grabbed her handbag and wove her way out of the Purple Pig.

“Interesting group of people,” Jack said.

“Oh, yeah,” Cole said. “I hate dealing with attorneys.”

“Looks like you’re going to have to deal with a whole tableful,” Jack said. “Follow up with everyone at that table and see what you can find out anything about where Sowers got his drugs.”

“What’s up with the military angle?” Cole asked.

“Victim was killed by a hollow point .308,” Jack said.

“Ahh,” Cole said, nodding. “Sniper rifle.”

“Martinez and a couple of the guys are out looking for where the shot came from. The drive-by was just cover for the killer. Jaye and I are going to go track down Bethany Wildes.”

“Have fun with that,” Cole said, slapping Jack on the shoulder as he headed out.

“Oh, and Cole,” Jack said, grinning. “Lily was right about the Porsche too. Looks like you and Martinez are going to have to pony up some cash.”

“I’ll pay her off in other ways,” Cole said, winking.

I closed my eyes. “Everyone is way too comfortable sharing the details of their sex lives with us.”

“Ease up, Grandma,” Jack said. “Let the kids have their fun.”

I elbowed Jack in the ribs and headed outside. I could hear his chuckle behind me.

CHAPTERFOUR

Jasmine had been rightabout Bethany living within walking distance. For that matter, Lily had been right about it too.

While I hunted down our coats near our fallen table, Jack did a search for Bethany Wildes in the system and came up with an address just down the block for one of the apartments above all the trendy shops that had been going in recently.

I handed Jack his coat and brushed glass from the back of his collar. “Maybe we should ask Lily the lottery numbers,” I said. “Or who’s going to win the Super Bowl. Or whether or not Cole is going to propose to her.”

“Hmm…” Jack said, helping me with my own coat. The way he said it made me take a closer look at him. He had his poker face on.

I gasped loudly. “Heisgoing to propose to her!”

“Ssh,” he said, looking around, but Lily and Sheldon had already left with the body.

“They barely know each other,” I whispered.

We moved with purpose around the paramedics and crime scene techs so no one would stop us, and headed south of the courthouse.

“Lily comes from a long line of medicine women,” Jack said. “Maybe she knows everything about him already and loves him anyway.”
