“You said when I get pregnant,” I said.

“What do you mean?” he asked.

“You said we’d be normal and have normal schedules when I get pregnant.”

“We are normal. I didn’t say we’re not normal.”

“You know what I mean,” I said. “And we are kind of abnormal. But in a good way.” I shook my head. “Stop distracting me. My point is you said we’d go to that schedule after I get pregnant. What are we doing in the meantime?”

“I’ve got some ideas on that,” Jack said. “Starting with both of us taking a few vacation days and going somewhere warm. This has been the longest February in the history of time. And then when we come back I suggest you start looking for some more help at the funeral home. Someone to work weekends and nights. You never know how long it’ll take us to make a baby, but we’ll give it our best shot. And if a case comes along that seems interesting and not too dangerous…”

I arched a brow as he left the sentence hanging. “I can deal with that,” I said. “Interesting and not too dangerous. Something like that rarely comes along.”

“Rarely,” he agreed. “But if it does…”

“We’re on the case,” I said. “We’re a good team.”

He stood and pulled me up. “The best.” And then he scooped me up into his arms.

“What are you doing?” I asked, giggling.

“You said you wanted romance.”

It was hard to disagree with that.
