“Maybe,” Gabe said, shrugging. “But maybe it makes us better because we have more to fight for.”

Grace kissed two of her fingers and then laid them gently on top of the tombstone. She wasn’t sure the next time they’d get to visit. But it didn’t matter. Maddie would always be with her.

She and Gabe held hands in silence as they made their way back to the black sedan parked at the edge of the cemetery.

“So what exactly are we fighting for this time?” Grace asked, once they were in the car and driving between the rows of headstones and trees that shaded loved ones while they rested in eternity.

“Funny you should ask,” Gabe said. “How do you feel about France?”

“I’ve always felt very warm toward their museums,” she said, smiling.

“Yes, I don’t suppose you’d know anything about the Renoir that was stolen a couple of years ago.”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” Grace said. “The newspapers reported it had just been misplaced while it was being cleaned. I believe you’ll find it on display if you’d like to stop by the Louvre before we get down to business.”

“Uh hmm,” Gabe said. “I’m glad you’re on the side of the good guys. You made an excellent criminal.”

“Thank you, my love.” Grace sighed. “I will say good-guy pay isn’t nearly as lucrative.”

“And somehow I’ve managed to provide you with rifles and hot meals. I suppose I should be grateful you’ve stuck it out this long.”

“Cheeky,” she said, grinning. “You’re in an unusually playful mood. It must be some job.”

“Let’s just say that a certain government would like to pay us in diamonds.”

Grace raised her brows, intrigued. “Looks like I’ll be sticking around a little longer.”

Gabe lifted her hand and kissed it gently. “Till death do us part.”
