“Tell me, little witch…” My thumb circles that soft skin around her hip bone. “Through all those fantasies, did you make yourself come thinking of me?”

Her eyes widen, slight shock filling them as she pulls the side of her bottom lip between her teeth, her smile turning sinful. “I couldn’t.”

“Was I not enough? Was the thought of my tongue on your skin not enough to get you off?” I dip into that sensitive spot where her neck meets her ear and swipe it with my tongue. “Or my hands stroking every inch of you?”

She shakes her head, rubbing her cheek against mine.

“I refused to give myself that—an orgasm to a fantasy of you.”

I almost freeze, but I meet her gaze, so close, our lips almost touch. Almost.

“Why, Annika?”

“I felt like… like I was stealing it away from you. The real you. This first orgasm had to be yours. Ithasto be yours.”

Sweet Mary mother of God.

The world stops spinning, time on pause. I can’t even hear the waterfall anymore. Life seems to have ceased. Apart from ours. Just as our lips gravitate closer, with no space left for even a breath, annoying fucking screeches split our silence and the whole moment crashes around us.

I exhale as I pull back, turning to the people who just passed through the waterfall—one girl, two guys.

The spell is broken.

“Oooh, looks like we have a party on our hands! Who’s this little lady?” A lanky, smug looking asshole smirks toward Annika, and I feel her wince under my tightening grip. “She looks positively delicious, perfect for a sandwich. Willing to share?”

The dead man wiggles his fucking eyebrows at me, and it takes but a second for my hand to wrap around his throat, slamming his back against the wall, his fingers clawing on my arm. Someone gasps behind me, then I feel a hand on my back, but this is not the fucking time.

“I usually enjoy teaching dickheads like you a lesson,” I seethe. “But you wiped off the line when you crossed it, and I need to redraw it in your goddamn blood.”

He’s writhing against the cave wall, smashing his hand onto my arm, trying to pull it off as he repeatedly attempts to gasp for air but fails. He sounds like a dying cat, and I squeeze his throat harder to silence him. Turning purple, his eyes bulge as more hands slam against my back, and an arm wraps around my throat, trying to pull me off of him. I throw my head back and a sharp pain splits up the nape of my neck as a screeching woman shouts abuse at me.

“Shut the fuck up!” I yell and whip my gaze to the side, my eyes landing on the woman who freezes in place, next to an idiot who’s holding onto his bleeding nose.

“Ro—Ronan?”

A sweet, meek voice pulls my attention, and I look to my right where Annika stands, wide-eyed, hands pressed against her chest. Fear is painted in her eyes, but more vivid than that is something else—realization. This is her first-hand experience of what she’s gotten herself into.

When the man suddenly gasps against my hand, I throw him into the other two, watching them fall like dominos.

“Next time, you’re all fucking dead,” I grunt.

“You asshole! Wait until I tell my fucking father! You’ll be in jail before the end of the fucking week!” the one who’s supposed to be dead yells between gasps.

“Good. Go tell him. Tell him that Ronan Hennessey strangled you for propositioninghis womanin front of him.”

He scrunches his eyebrows, calculating my words like there’s a familiarity to them. I don’t wait for the ball to drop, but I hear their whispers after I turn around.

I ignore Annika’s stunned expression, grab her hand, and pull her away with me, disappearing through the thick curtain of water, back into the real world.

CHAPTER 6

ANNIKA

He pulls me through theviolent spray threatening to catch me in its underwater whirlpool. My hand is still in his as he guides me away from the waterfall, and with the other one, I’m frantically pushing off the hair clinging to my face. The world seems to explode around us all at once. Music and laughter, incessant background noise mixing with the cascade, and it’s almost too much, too soon.

I turn my gaze to the falls, even as Ronan still moves us away from it. I want back… back in that moment where he kept me on the precipice of pleasure and longing. His touch on my skin, the electric bursts rushing from head to toe, his breath against my pulse, those hungry eyes on me.

Then the fury came, the violence, and I should be terrified. It should make me scream and run. But it was the protective look in his eyes that keeps me here.
