“I think we’re going to war.”

ANNIKA

He’s so goddamn beautiful. My heart hurts as I stare at Ronan in this video call. I don’t know how I got here from lusting over a guy I saw in a photo, to begging him to come to me and not risk his life trying to get me out of the shit I caused. I miss his touch, crave his rumbling whispers in my ear, his possessive grip on me when he sleeps.

“I can’t bear the risk you’re taking for me. Please send someone else. Or just… run. Come to me.”

I can see the fall of his chest as he exhales, the expression on his face holding a hint of pity.

“It’s too late, my little witch. He wants me there, and if there’s any chance he’ll be willing to make a deal with us, I can’t risk pissing him off by not being there.”

“What if he says no?”

I dread the answer or the prospect that question poses.

“We’ll kill him.”

Such a short, matter-of-fact answer. I was always running around dangerous circles, but never have I been posed face to face with the prospect of a man being killed for me without a second thought or a shift in expression. This man right here would do it without even flinching. He would kill for me. I should tell him it’s wrong. Murder is wrong. But I can’t even convince myself that it is.

“Just like that,” I reply.

“I wanted to do it the moment I entered that room. I understood the fear in your voice as soon as I laid eyes on him. But we were outnumbered… it was risky.”

“Not to mention, you were in a busy restaurant?!” I point out the obvious.

“Yeah, not gonna lie, if we weren’t outnumbered, I would have done it anyway. Public place or not. The room was private enough.”

“You would have gone to jail.” I shake my head.

“But you would have been safe.”

I swallow the knot that’s suddenly formed in my throat as I take in those words. They’re heavy. The implication is so much more than I expected.

“I would have waited for you,” I all but whisper.

“You would have had no choice.”

A cheeky grin pulls at his lips and suddenly that heaviness migrates somewhere deep in my belly, and I miss him for a whole other reason now.

“Being away from me might do you some good,” I say, matching his expression.

“I doubt it. I’ll come in ten seconds flat when I finally get my hands on you.”

“It’s only been a few days, Ronan.” I playfully roll my eyes.

“Like your panties aren’t wet right now, and you haven’t even started properly imagining how hard I’ll fuck you when I see you again.”

I bite my lip as an image begins forming in my head, and I’m just about to respond, when a door opens behind him, and someone stands in the frame.

“For fuck’s sake,” he mutters as he turns around, rolling his eyes.

“Something’s happening.”I hear someone speak.

“I’ll be right there.”

When he turns back to me, the look in his eyes tears that muscle that sits in my chest.

“I think I have to tell you something.” My voice cracks.
