I look from one face to the other and huff. “What are you two fucks cackling about now?”

Sly's black eyes turn my way, and he smirks, one heavily inked hand tousling his wavy hair into an even bigger mess. "You have been off since we arrived here, Carson. We think we know why that is," he declares. His careful highbrow elocution, in total contrast with hisbad-biker-just-released-from-jail, mean look, as always, making me grin.

I guess we all sound something like this. We all have posh accents, and there’s no shaking them, but he’s the one with the Brit mother, so he had it worse growing up.

I open my hands and lean back even further. “Do shed light on the working of my wayward mind then, my friend,” I goad him, purposefully enunciating each word like he does.

He throws a pillow in my face, laughing. “Stop it, you douche!”

“Ladies, ladies! Calm down!” Rick laughs and then turns my way. “Do stop mocking Sylvester, Carson. That’s uncalled for,” he scolds imperiously, sounding like the Queen Consort of England at high tea.

Sly drops the drumming stick he was rolling on top of his knuckles and flips him the bird with a dirty look. He hates when we use his full name. “Make fun of me as much as you motherfuckers want. You know how much tail this accent gets me.”

Rick nods solemnly. “That is true indeed!”

He also gets a pillow thrown at his face for that little retort and then lets said pillow drop to his lap and turns back my way. “I have to say that was some pretty decent evasive maneuvering on your part, Cars. Didn’t work, but you still get props. Now spill. Don’t make us beat it out of you.”

I glare at him. “Don’t lawyer me, Richard. Didn’t your accomplice interrogator over there say that you guys had me already figured out?”

Rick picks up his guitar and starts to pluck at its strings absentmindedly. “Well, yes, kinda… you’re all over the fucking place, and it’s obviously about a woman.”

“We don’t knowwhichwoman. That is the question,” Sly chimes in, eyes on the two tablets of Aspirin he just dropped in his glass as they fizzle in the water. His back must be bothering him again.

"Can't be one of the groupies," Rick muses, his lucky red and golden jasper guitar pick rolling back and forth between his middle and forefinger.

I frown. “How would you know?”

My friends look at each other, and then they both scoff.

Maybe I should tell them about Little Beauty and get it over with. For one thing, I could pick their brains about the situation, and, for another, I’ve made my peace with the fact that, crazy or not, I’m not going to be on that LA-bound jet with them tonight, so it’s not like I can keep this from them. They may be fucked up, jet-lagged, and stuff, but they will be sure to notice that my ass is missing at some point.

I smile. “Point taken. Okay, fine… I don’t have time to lose anyway. So here it is: I’m distracted because of a woman, yes. And she’s not a groupie, you’re right. Actually, I think I need your input on this situation because I don’t really know what I’m doing.”

“Well, you see, it’s really simple. You might have forgotten, but… you basically pull out your cock and shake the cobwebs off it, then—”

“You think you’re so funny, don’t you?!” I thump Sly on his forehead, and he stops his idiotic teasing.

“I know I am.” He falls to his side, laughing his ass off as I grumble to myself.

“Okay, I’m done. This is something serious, guys! Not that it matters… you fucks couldn’t help me out with the mess I made if you tried.” I stand up and walk to the balcony, eyes on the tidal basin glinting in the sun. They must have realized I’m not fucking around because they both come to stand where I am, one man on either side of me.

Rick clasps my shoulder. “Sorry, dude…”

Sly nods along, a finger scratching his bearded chin. “No more horsing around, I promise. Just tell us what’s going on with this girl, okay?”

I huff out a breath. “I guess it can’t hurt if I do talk about it. I was going to anyway since I’m not coming back to LA tonight.”

They both mutter similar oaths, looking incredulous.

Sly moves in front of me. “Are you serious right now?”

I cross my arms over my chest. “Dead serious.”

“You’re staying here?! For some girl?” Rick asks, eyebrows arching high into his forehead.

“Forthisgirl. Yes, I’m staying…” I stare him down.

My friends look at each other in silence and then smile my way.
