He lets me get away, but his fingers linger a little, making me feel all tingly as my heart hammers away everywhere under my skin. God, this is really bad.

I look up and upand upuntil my eyes meet his intense, aqua-green gaze, and I gulp.

Carson smiles down at me, one hand gripping his brown hair where it’s longer at the front and moving it out of those killer eyes of his, and my mouth suddenly goes drier than the Sahara.

Damn, someone with such a height advantage over the rest of us mere mortals shouldn't have been allowed to be this handsome, too.

“I’m sorry, Mia. Are you okay?” he asks.

It’s not difficult to read his full lips when they happen to be everything that I’m thinking about right now. So I nod that, yes, I am fine.

Even iffinecouldn’t be further from how I’m feeling right now.Shatteredwould be a better definition.

People are coming and going all around us, so he takes my hand and moves us out of the way, and I just let him.

He stops when my back hits a wall; his body far too close to mine, making me tremble.

His eyes are on my hand when he strokes the back of it gently but with purpose, turning my legs gelatinous as I stand there like an idiot trying to cope with his presence.

Then he takes a step back and smiles at me again. His right hand closes in a fist with his thumb sticking out on the side. The gesture is deliberate and careful, so it’s not by chance that he’s forming an‘A’. Maintaining the A-shape, he moves the hand over his chest and makes a couple of clockwise rotations.

I blink in surprise. He is signing to me. He just used the ASL sign for’Sorry.’

I smile, waving his apology away.

I’m surprised and touched that he would go to the trouble of learning even a single sign on my behalf. I’m a stranger to him, after all. Just a maid he feels bad for screaming at.

He really must be a nice guy, no matter what Google says.

He keeps going, not exactly using ASL but signing all the same.

He touches his chest, then taps under his eye, then points at me.

He’s basically letting me know that he didn’t just bump into me by chance. He’s saying he was looking for me.

I tilt my head in question. Why?’I mouth. I’m shy to use my voice around him, so I move my lips slowly and emphasize the fact that I’m asking a question with a flourish of my hand near my chin, hoping he understands.

He spreads the fingers of one hand, palm down, and moves it up and down. I don’t think he’s signing exactly. More like miming something. I think he means‘Wait.’

I look away from his hand and up to his face. He moves his lips, and I read‘Wait a sec,’ the word ‘Sec’accompanied by his index raising once.

I nod again, smiling.

Carson fishes his phone out of his pocket and stares at it for a moment. I’m guessing to unlock it. Then he starts to type away at the screen with both of his thumbs.

A moment later, he puts his phone in my hand, and I look down to read what he wrote on the white page note.

“I don’t know what I said yesterday that was wrong, Mia. I know something bothered you when I apologized. You turned so formal all of a sudden. I didn’t mean to offend you. I just wanted to make things okay. Can we go grab a coffee together? I want to talk with you, please.”

I huff out a breath, not sure what I should do right now. I don’t know if I can explain this to him in a way that won’t make me sound like either a huge wimp or a total bitch in the process.

And coffee with him? Why would he want to grab a coffee with me? And should I go?

I look from the phone’s screen to his face and back. Damn, he is looking at me with eyes that are practically begging me to say yes. He almost looks nervous and eager. That’s what his micro-expressions are telling me. But why would he be feeling this way about me?

It makes no sense. He is—

One of his hands gently touches my arm, interrupting mytrain wreckof thoughts and bringing me back to him.
