Page 47 of Rocking Her Silence

I break it off and let go of her face.

I study her intently.

Mia gives me an incredulous look, fingers touching her lips.

She appears to be almost disappointed. She picks up the phone and writes:

“That's it? I thought you wanted a real kiss in exchange for telling me your most guarded secret.”

I read the screen and grin, winking at her, then I take the phone from her outreached hand.

“That was me giving you A kiss… not THE kiss.”

Her reply is swift.

“What about our deal? You calling it off?”

I take her phone and type:

“I wouldn't dream of it… I'm telling you what you want to know… as for the real kiss, I'm reserving the right to choose when and where it's going to happen, baby.”

I can see her little throat working as she reads my note. She is now realizing that maybe she bit off more than she could chew. But she's a tough one, and I know she won't go back on her word.

Instead of giving her the phone, I delete my own words and write something else, needing to break the tension that my little declaration has created between us.

I show her the phone, and the screen reads:

“Everybody takes a stab at it, as you know…”

Mia grins, tilts her head, then gestures for the phone.

“I've read the craziest theories online…”

She shows me the phone and then deletes the note.

I nod. Yeah, most people seem to always go the most ridiculous routes ever when they try to explain it.

She starts typing again, then turns the screen back to me.

“This one article I found said you picked the name because you mix your own special blend of twenty-one types of incense and like to burn it just before every performance for luck. Another was similar in topic, I guess… only kinda illegal… it said it's a blend of twenty-one types of weed you guys like to smoke. LOL

Some creepy wack job on a dedicated website claims that it means you had to sacrifice twenty-one people so that some demon would make you guys rich and famous. That was definitely the craziest one I read…”

I read the screen and laugh outright, then get the phone from her.

“I didn't know the one about the ritual killing thing… Rick is going to get a kick out of that one. You have to send me the link…”

She giggles, nodding.

I delete my note and write:

“Care to share your best guess before I tell you?”

Mia smiles big, showing me that cute little elusive dimple of hers that has such a power over my heart. Damn…

She takes her phone and writes:

“Well, I figured it's got to be about music, right? So something came to mind… it's a bit technical, so I don't think it's correct. I think it's gotta be something more poetic based on the lyrics you write than what my mind went to. Mine is pretty mundane, still…”
