I giggle.‘How modest of you!’

He shrugs. “Kidding, babe. This shit is difficult! I’m good at doing it with my fingers, I guess… but it’s not that easy to follow when you do it. You say I’m fast, but I’m a snail compared to you.”

I giggle.‘Well, I’ve had years of practice,’I tell him slowly, fingerspelling as I go.

If I had the balls to use my voice, I could make things so much easier between us, but I’m still too shy for that…

Carson taps my shoulder to get my attention back on him, and my eyes go to his.

Not for the first time, he repeats the signs for‘Big’and‘Grumpy’that I made just a few minutes ago, a puzzled look on his face.

They are a little fudged since he seems to ignore their meaning, but still. Amazing.

“You always make these two signs. Always, when you look at me or after you say my name, Mia.” He tells me, talking carefully so I can read his lips; his hands fingerspelling here and there to help me along.

I grin, feeling the perennial blush that's always on my cheeks around him, deepening. Busted.

I repeat the signs for him.

He shakes his head. Then he fingerspells and talks slowly, never breaking eye contact with me. "I tried to kind of do a reverse search, but it's impossible with ASL. You can look up almost any word in English and find a sign, but if you try and describe the signs to Google to find what they translate to in spoken English, you will soon run into trouble."

I laugh, nodding.

“Can you tell me what they mean?” he asks.

I’m not sure I should, but how can I not?

I do the sign for‘Big’and then for‘Grumpy’again, this time also mouthing them.

He chuckles. “Big Grumpy?!”

I nod, smiling.

He shakes his head, still grinning. “It’s like a nickname or something?”

I nod again.

He takes my hand in his and then brings it to his lips, and drops a single soft kiss on my fingers.

Oh boy…

“You know… I have a special name for you as well.”

My eyes grow big.‘You do?’

He nods. “I’ve been calling you this one thing since I saw you… because I didn’t know your name then, and it kinda stuck.”

‘Are you going to tell me?’

Carson’s eyes narrow as he follows my lips intently. He nods. “Sure, baby.”

My eyes stay on his lips at first, sure he will simply tell me with words, then he moves his hands in my line of view, between us.

He’s going to sign it?

He carefully moves his hands to the center of his chest, palms open and flat, and slowly brings them together, pulling his shoulders downward and inward as well as he goes.

The sign is clear:‘Little.’
