But before I got the chance to knock on her door, it swung open, with Tillie looking at me wide-eyed.

“You,” she said with a gasp.

“We need to talk.”

Her little menace of a dog chose that exact moment to run around her, and with a loud yip, he jumped up and propped his paws on my thigh, panting in excitement. I glanced down, confused as to when we’d become friends, but I patted his head anyway.

“Talk about what?” Tillie asked.

“Can I come in?”

She thought about it for a second, then nodded and stepped aside. I walked in, and the dog ran around my feet, threatening to trip me up until I finally picked him up hangman style and held him over my shoulder. He immediately went into his act, wailing and crying like he was being set on fire.

“Roscoe, stop that,” Tillie said as she came toward us with an apologetic look. “Sorry about him. I really am trying to get him trained, but it takes time.”

I glanced at her. “It would be easier to give him away. This isn’t exactly the type of house for this kind of dog.” Her house was the smallest one on the block, both inside and out. The dog didn’t have a big enough yard for him to run around and expend his energy.

She shook her head. “That’s not an option. The shelters they have in town are overcrowded already, and with the way he is, I’m not confident he’ll get adopted again. They might send him to the pound.”

I looked back up at the dog, who met my gaze with a pitiful look. “Behave,” I said and set him down. I didn’t think he understood, but he wasn’t about to get dangled again, so he simply set himself down by my leg.

Tillie looked impressed. “How did you do that?”

“Practice.”

“You’ve trained dogs before?’

“No. With men.” I sat down and gestured for her to sit too.

She did, looking around nervously and rubbing her hand against her skirt, “So, what did you want to talk about?”

I opened my mouth, but before I could get a word out, she held her hand up and said, “And just so we get it off the table, I’m still so sorry about last night. I shouldn’t have attacked you like that.”

“Attacked?” What the hell was she talking about?

“I know you came over to do the right thing and see if I was okay, and you were just trying to comfort me, and then I…ki—kissed you. Without consent. That was low of me.”

What the…did we have the same experience last night? Share the same kiss?

“I just find myself unbelievable sometimes,” she kept babbling. “Because I don’t mean to screw up, but sometimes I just can’t help myself, and I—”

“Hold your horses there,” I said, cutting her off. “You didn’t do anything to me that I didn’t want.”

She shook her head. “I know you’re just saying that—”

“I’m not just saying dick.” The vehemence of my tone drew her eyes back to me. “I didn’t push you away because I didn’t like the kiss. I pushed you away because I didn’t want to fuck you outside against your doorstep.”

ELEVEN

TILLIE

The atmosphere was instantly charged.

I could see the heat in his eyes as shock and lust slammed into me like an avalanche, making every nerve ending in my body extra sensitive. I swore I could feel the breeze caressing my skin, goosebumps breaking out. His gaze darkened, turning into a cloudy storm. It was causing my nipples to pucker and push against my bra and making me want to squeeze my legs together to expel the sensation. That or prolong it.

Oh my gosh.

My heart was thundering in my chest, and I told myself to look away, but I couldn’t.
