I pounced on another, knocking him out with a single blow to the head, and I ended another with a snap to the neck, slowly making my way toward Brick. I heard the cock of a gun.

“I’m going to kill you, bastard,” Brick snarled viciously, but I wasn’t going to give him the satisfaction of even shooting me, much less killing me. I ducked as he fired, and I heard one of his men scream, probably as the bullet pierced him. Brick fired another shot, but it whizzed above my head as I crept toward him on the floor. Then I grabbed his legs, taking him down in one swoop.

I knocked the gun out of his hand and slammed my fist into his face. Then, I wrapped my hand around his neck and leaned in to whisper, “It’s me who’s going to kill you.”

“Please,” he gasped. “Please.”

But I didn’t care. I was merciless when it came to her, and he’d touched what was mine. Not once, but twice, he’d tried to hurt her.

I was going to kill him.

The end was much quicker than I would have liked.

As silence descended, I was aware of whimpering, most likely coming from Brenda.

“What’s going on?” A torchlight suddenly permeated the dark as the old man came in. “I heard shots. The police are going to be here soon.”

The light flashed over to me and then to Brenda. The minute the light hit her, she broke down into tears.

“Oh my gosh, thank you for saving us,” Brenda cried out.

I ignored her at first, too busy taking off Tillie’s restraints. But then she ran to me and grabbed my arms.

“Thank you, thank you.”

I’d never hit a woman, but the sudden urge to do it was powerful and overwhelming.

I steadfastly ignored it. Instead, I pulled the restraints off Tille and grabbed Brenda’s hands, looping the tie around them.

“I’ll let the police deal with you this time,” I told her as her confused gaze slid to me. “But you pull this shit again, and I’ll forget that I don’t hurt women. Understood?”

Her eyes widened, and she opened her mouth, probably to utter more lies. But then she must have caught the look on my face because her face dropped, and she seemed resigned.

Finally, I turned to Tillie and breathed, “My love.”

She was frozen at first, but the words sparked her out of her reverie. Tears filled her eyes, breaking her shock. “You came for me.”

“I did. I always will. I love you, Tillie.”

“Oh my God.” She slapped her hands over her mouth. “Really?”

I nodded.

“I love you too,” she gasped and then burst into tears. I wrapped my arms around her and pulled her to my body, feeling like everything was good for the first time in a long time.

And even though there were no candlelight dinner ornaments, fireworks, or other explosions, and even though there were a bunch of dead bodies on the floor and a treacherous best friend crying in the corner, there was still something magical about the moment.

We were magic.

EPILOGUE

TILLIE

“Are you going to stare at that all day, or are you actually going to open it?”

My husband’s wry voice came over my shoulder, and I didn’t need to look over to see his eyes dancing with amusement.

But I glanced at him anyway and saw him standing over me with our baby girl in his arms.
