And then the bastard killed her.

“That was probably why he changed his name,” Ezra continued.

I remember when my father did that. My father told me that he was changing his first name and also our last names because he wanted a fresh start. He wanted us to leave the past behind. I’d been too young to remember that until now.

“How come no one found her since then?” I asked.

“He’s good at covering his tracks.” A bitter expression was on his face. “And he destroyed every evidence that Max ever existed. We taught him well, I suppose.”

I sighed, feeling despair crawling in my throat. My poor mother. “So how was she able to get me my house?”

“The day before she left, she withdrew some money from the account I opened for your father,” he said. “I think some of it was used to purchase this house in your name, and the rest was to run away with.”

“Oh, God.” A sob escaped me, and he gathered me into his arms as I wept. I cried for my mother, who was doing everything she could with the little she had, and I cried for my younger self, who thought she’d been abandoned.

And after crying, I sent a little prayer for her. I knew Mom was somewhere nice, watching over me, and I wanted to thank her for the chance she gave me. I was determined to make the most of it. I would put my all into school, and I was determined to be a mom that my daughter could be proud of.

Which brought us to now.

Because as hard as I worked, I was still nervous about opening the email which would tell me my grade. I’d been taking online courses for the past few months to get my psychology degree. The grade would determine if I could continue with the course at the state college.

A large comforting hand lay on my shoulders. When I turned, there was utter trust in Ezra’s eyes. “You passed.”

I frowned at him. “How do you know?”

“I know,” he said, making my heart soft. “I have complete faith in you.”

That was it. I had to get up and kiss him then. His words also gave me the boldness I needed to open the email. So I opened it. And screamed, jumping laughingly before I hugged both him and our daughter, who was still sleeping in his arms.

Because he was right.

I passed.

With flying colors.

The End.
