Although, when Zane didn’t even come down to see us off, I was a little offended.

“He’s not feeling too good,” Meech told us, trying to explain and alleviate the awkwardness. Then, he winked at Casey. “He won’t admit it, but sparring with you tuckered him out some.”

“Really?” Casey’s eyes widened.

“Sure. But don’t tell him I told you this, or he’s going to kill me.”

“Alright,” Casey replied, looking very proud of himself. “Well, tell him I enjoyed it. And also tell him thanks for the lesson. We’ll be back next week.”

“Sure thing. Say, can you wait in the truck while I talk to your aunt for a bit?”

“Sure,” Casey said, and he was all too happy to dash off to the truck, leaving me behind.

It didn’t take Meech long to get to the point.

“Look, I don’t know what’s going on between you and Zane.” He rubbed his hair uncomfortably as he spoke, as though he wasn’t used to getting this personal with people. “And I’m not sure I want to. But that kid….” He sighed. “I don’t like when kids get in the way of adult affairs. You get what I’m trying to say?”

I did. “I’m not going to let anything hurt Casey. Not me or Zane.”

Meech smiled. “That’s what I wanted to hear. And Zane…be gentle with him too. I know how he seems, but trust me. The guy is a big softie, and I…he’s already been through a lot.”

With my sister? I wanted to ask, but I didn’t want to bring it up again and have an awkward situation like earlier, back in the kitchen. I was slowly accepting that I didn’t understand everything between my sister and Zane…and maybe there were things I didn’t know.

Things I didn’t know about Zane in general.

Or maybe you’re just trying to justify being attracted to him.

I thought about the picture on the kitchen island. I wanted to ask about that too. I knew I wasn’t supposed to, but I wanted to.

“Oh, also…” Meech added. “This goes without saying, but don’t tell him you saw the picture on the kitchen island.”

I nodded back. Well, that answered my question. The boy, whoever he was, was none of my business.

ZANE

Meech’s footsteps were heavy on the floorboards but faster than usual as he ascended the stairs. It meant he probably had something to get off his chest.

I didn’t turn around when I heard the door open and shut behind me. Instead, I pretended I was so engrossed in the emails I was reading that I wasn’t in the mood for any discussion.

But I barely saw the words and letters in front of my face. I was still thinking about the fucking kiss downstairs. It was still like fire rolling through my blood, and my dick was still hard and angry at the lack of fulfillment.

A part of me was grateful that Meech had interrupted us when he did since I knew it was beyond inappropriate for me to sleep with Charlotte again. But another larger part of me wanted to pummel my friend into the ground for his horrible fucking timing.

“So,” Meech finally said. “You have a kid.”

Ah, I knew he had recognized the similarities between Casey and me.

“Yup,” I replied curtly.

“And you didn’t think to mention this to me?”

“I didn’t know I was supposed to share every detail of my life with you,” I said, not turning around to face him.

There was a pregnant pause.

“Right,” Meech said.
