“Meech!” I screamed, and my best friend was already behind me. But the second he grabbed Toby, Viper appeared in the ring, too, his men surrounding him.

He looked pissed. “That’s not playing fair.”

“Fuck you, you bastard.” The rage mounted and built inside me. He wasn’t satisfied with just killing me. He wanted to kill Toby too.

I was pretty sure he paid those boys to kill or seriously injure Toby, and then once he’d beaten me to the ground, he would reveal who the masked fighter was. Just to see my despair.

Fucking bastard. I was going to kill him.

“Let the kid go,” I snarled. “We still have our little deal to take care of.”

His eyes flared as the crowd quietened to listen to us. I spoke a little louder, so they could all hear.

“Or did you forget to mention to everyone that you wanted me to throw the match just to suit your ego? And not only that, but you threatened to kill my friend if I didn’t.”

“What?” one person called out from the crowd.

“That’s horrible,” Meech exclaimed, adding flame to the fire. “Not fair, dude.”

“Yeah!”

Disgruntled grumbling filled the crowd. Everyone wanted to see bloodshed, but they wanted it fair and square. Viper’s face twisted in rage.

“I’m going to kill you, bastard.”

“Likewise. So let them go, and let’s settle this one on fucking one.”

Viper’s features tightened. He jerked his head once, and his men stepped out of the ring one by one. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Meech drag Toby away, and I prayed he had the forethought to get the kid out of this place and to a hospital.

Then, it was just me and Viper.

I wasn’t scared even though he was a head taller than me. I’d defeated him before, and that was back when I had very little to live for. Now I had more. I had my Charlotte and my son—my family. Maybe it was cocky of me because I hadn’t trained in years, but there was a whole new energy filling me. I was going to beat him. I was sure of it.

I didn’t hesitate. I rushed toward him, ducked under his first punch, and aimed a roundhouse kick. He dodged it, punching me in the rib instead. Damn, that hurt like shit. The bastard had grown about four times stronger since our last match, but I didn’t care. The adrenaline made me not feel the pain as I attacked him. So was my certainty.

I would win.

I hated him, and he might be a bloodthirsty bastard, but I would win for Charlotte.

And true to my word, a few minutes and one bloody nose later, I had an arm wrapped around his throat in a full chokehold.

“Tap out,” I growled into his ear as he struggled. “Tap out, you motherfucker, before I kill you right here.”

Viper’s eyes were red as he glared back at me. But he wasn’t stupid. He knew I would do it, so he tapped his hand twice on the mat.

The crowd roared even louder. I pushed Viper off me and got up, but before I could get out, I felt someone move behind me. I danced aside in just enough time for a gust of wind to stab at where I was standing. Then, I quickly spun around and saw that the bastard, Viper, was behind me with a knife in his hand.

I raised my eyebrow. “You’re just a sore loser, aren’t you?”

“Shut the fuck up,” he raged, stabbing the knife through the air. I tackled him, flipping him onto the ground, but before I knew it, about half a dozen hands were on me, pulling me back. Shit, I forgot about his men.

Before I could fight them off, a knife slice through my side. Pain exploded through my body, but I held firm and kicked them off, flipping off the floor and onto my feet. Then, I glared at Viper.

He charged at me again, but this time, I flipped the knife in his hand, and it buried itself into his stomach.

I saw the utter shock in his eyes when it did.

“Die, you bastard,” I hissed harshly, though I knew the knife in his stomach probably wouldn’t be enough to kill him.
