If only she’d told me all this, then everything would have been so different.

But at the same time, I couldn’t regret anything. Because if everything had been different, I might not have ended up with Charlotte.

Kelly’s diary, though, gave detailed information about a safety deposit box where she kept a phone that contained some of the evidence of money laundering, which she’d swiped from Viper. Brave girl. The phone also contained a video of him killing the man.

The information was enough to get him behind bars, and they were working on taking down the Bruners’ criminal syndicate. Most of their assets had been frozen already, and some fled the country while others were arrested. The underground fight club, another one of the Bruners’ investments, was shut down permanently.

“She’ll be really proud of him,” Charlotte spoke up, looking wistful as she did. “Kelly, that is.”

I looked at Casey and turned back to her. “Yeah, but she would be proud of you too.”

Charlotte’s eyes widened. “Really?”

“Yes,” I said and kissed her.

Charlotte

I was drawn out of a blissful sleep by the sound of humming. I smiled. I already knew who it was. I had woken up to it every day for the past two weeks.

The doctor had told me that the weeks right after I gave birth were going to be the toughest weeks, but honestly, I’d never felt so relaxed. My soon-to-be husband treated me like I was made of china and didn’t so much as let my feet touch the floor. He’d been there for every hour of the birth and had woken up every night, being there with me even when I fed her.

And sometimes, when she let out a cry, he was the first one out of bed, going to check on her. Just like he did now.

I pried one eye open, watching as he picked our daughter out of her crib. She immediately quietened down, calmed by his humming. Zane watched our daughter with awe in his eyes, a pure love glowing from them.

Of course, Toby and Casey doted over her too. Just yesterday, I heard them arguing over who got to take her to school when she was all grown up. Casey said it was his right, but Toby made a good argument about being an “uncle,” too.

But none of their affection for Zaya was as strong as her father, who held now cradled her in his arms as though he intended to protect her from the world.

“Shhh, my love,” he said. “Your mother’s still getting her beauty rest. It’s just two of us here. Tell Papa what’s wrong.”

My heart sang with love until it boiled over. I didn’t think I could be any happier than I was now.

I smiled and shut my eyes, pretending to be asleep.

The End.
