That was when my anger bubbled over.

“And the next time you come to my house uninvited, lady, I am going to—” His words ended in a screech because I grabbed him from behind, shoving him away from her harshly. His angry eyes turned to me, and as I advanced, he backed up again. Despite his bravado, fear flickered in his gaze.

“What the fuck do you think you’re doing?” he stuttered.

I didn’t respond. I was trying to calm down because most of me still really wanted to take his head off. And if I hit him feeling the way I did right now, he would die.

What did that damn court-appointed therapist use to say? Right, deep breaths. Breathe in deeply and then release. Twice.

It wasn’t working at all. I still wanted to kill him.

He made it worse by stepping up to me and pointing at my chest. “Listen, tough guy—”

Without waiting for him to finish, I grabbed his finger and twisted it. He screamed and tried to throw a punch, but then I grabbed his wrist too. I spun him around, twisting both arms behind his back and digging my knee into his back to keep him on the floor.

“Ow ow ow ow ow!” he groaned.

And I was a sadistic bastard because hearing his pain was music to my ears.

“You done?” I asked, my voice quiet but menacing all the same. He craned his head to look at me, and the fear in his eyes had tripled.

“I’m going to call the cops,” he threatened.

I leaned in and said in a low voice, “Not if I kill you and hide your body first.”

His eyes flared open, and fear flashed across his face. He believed me. I looked like the kind of guy who would do that and have people to help me get away with it. And if I were, this asshole would certainly be the first one on the chopping block.

“Let me go,” he demanded.

“Why?” I asked, and I twisted his arm even more as I asked the questioned, leading to him biting off a scream.

“Please,” he gasped out.

I nearly laughed. Now he was begging. The man was a classic bully. He could argue with women all day long and abuse the repair man assigned to his unit. He was good to take on someone he thought he could beat. But face him against a man, and he turned into a little mouse.

And as much as I wanted to, I knew I couldn’t kill him.

“First off, you’re going to apologize to her, ” I said, the heat still firing off inside me. “Then, you’re going to get in your house and stay in there for the rest of the fucking day. Because if I even see you out and about, I just might lose it. You understand?”

He nodded frantically. I removed my knee from his back and turned him around to face Charlotte, who was staring up at both of us, gaping and wide-eyed.

I shook the man a little to prompt him.

“Sorry, ma’am,” he finally grumbled.

“Louder,” I said. “And nicer.”

The man’s face turned red with humiliation and anger. But he did bite out a higher “Sorry.”

I glanced at Charlotte to see if she would accept his apology. If she didn’t, I just might beat him up regardless.

“Erm, it’s okay,” Charlotte responded like she didn’t quite know what to say. “It was my fault anyway. I shouldn’t have come here unannounced and started calling you names. But we would really appreciate it if Sydney came back to the basketball practice tomorrow.”

The man looked like he wanted to say no, but one quick look at me, and he bit out, “I’ll think about it.”

Only then did I finally let him go. The bastard stumbled up to his feet and then looked back at me as he hurried into his house and slammed the door behind him.

I turned my attention back to Charlotte. She’d been staring at me, still sitting on the floor with a stunned look on her face.
