Finn rubs a finger against my jaw. “Hey, don’t worry. He won’t say anything.”

“Finn!” Bianca snaps behind me.

Finn snatches his hand away. I take two gigantic steps back from Finn. Crap! That’s all I need. Bianca witnessing Finn showing me a moment of affection. Why does Bianca always have the habit of sneaking up behind me?

With wide, shocked eyes, Bianca scans Finn from head to toe. “Is that the same suit you were wearing yesterday?” Her gaze flicks over to me. I know the second Bianca connects the dots. Her eyebrows shoot into her hairline.

“Excuse me, I’m going to start work.” I scurry to my desk, throwing my bag in the drawer. Before I have time to breathe, Bianca is standing in front of me, giving me the deadliest look.

“What do you think you’re doing?” Bianca says with a sneer, crossing her arms over her chest.

“Umm…getting ready for work?” But I know she’s referring to what she witnessed with Finn. The reason I didn’t want to arrive together. If he had just let me get out of the car and walk, I wouldn’t be having this conversation right now.

“Don’t play dumb. What are you doing with Finn? Do you think sleeping with him is going to help you climb the ladder around here? Or better yet, snag another rich husband?”

I gasp. How did she know about Derek?

“I know your wealthy husband died, leaving you nothing.” Bianca smirks.

“How did you—”

“I’m friends with one of his many mistresses. She was happy to fill me in on your pathetic life. I’ve been Finn’s assistant for years, and I know what he wants. He only fucks women. It’s never serious. No attachment. So don’t get your hopes up.”

My body is shaking. I’m not sure if it’s because Bianca knows about my life or her warning me about Finn. Probably a combination of both. “I’m here to work. Nothing more. What I do in my private life is none of your business.” I’m surprised to hear my voice sounding firm and not wavering like my insides feel.

Bianca stiffens. “I’m giving you a friendly warning.” There is nothing ‘friendly’ in Bianca’s twisted smile.

“What have you got for me to do today?” I want to focus on work, so I don’t have to think about Bianca’s cutting words.

“Check your email.” With that, Bianca saunters away from my desk.

I blow out a long breath and sink onto the chair. Propping my elbows on the desk, I drop my head in my hands.

Bianca has never been easy to work with. Now that she suspects something is going on between Finn and I, I dread what the day will bring.

Chapter Twenty-Three

FINN

IbarelystepintoHayden’s office when he shoots his question. “Are you and Harper back on?”

Pulling out a chair, I sit opposite Hayden at his desk. I hook an ankle over my knee. “No, we are not ‘back on’.”

“You spent the night together.” Hayden points at my suit I haven’t changed out of yet. I’d come straight to Hayden’s office before mine. I knew this conversation was coming. Better to get it over with before I start my day.

“I could have picked up Harper on her way to work,” I say.

“What’s going on?” Hayden doesn’t buy my bullshit.

“Nothing’s going on. We’ve decided to be friends.” My foot jiggles on top of my knee. Asking her to be friends is something I never thought I’d do in this lifetime. Will it be that simple? Or have we already complicated it with sex?

“You’re sleeping with her.” It isn’t a question. “What the fuck, man? After everything she’s done to you. I watched you lying in a hospital bed, praying you’d wake up. All because Harper fucked you over.”

The anguish on Hayden’s face is hard to watch. “You’re the one who told me I should talk to her. To get closure or some shit.”

“Yeah, talk. Not fuck. Have you forgotten how she tossed you aside like garbage? She broke you, and I don’t mean physically.”

“I haven’t forgotten. I know what I’m doing.” Do I? Whenever I’m with Harper, I haveno ideawhat I’m doing. Maybe Hayden’s right to be concerned. I don’t think clearly when I’m with her.
