I narrow my eyes at her. “I’m telling her about all of your sex toys.”

Harley rolls her eyes. “Oh, please. Mom’s a bigger freak than all of us. I’m sure her locked drawer is fuller than mine.” I quietly laugh. That’s true.

We make our way inside. Mom sits next to Jackson. Without even thinking about it, he immediately lifts her up and places her across his lap, kissing her neck. My sisters and I look at each other and smile at the way he is with her.

She turns back to him. “Jackson, have you had any bad dealings with Thomas Daulton?”

“Hmm, I’m not sure. I try to avoid dealing with him. He’s not my cup of tea.” He looks up at me. “Sorry, Reagan.”

“No need to apologize. He’s not my cup of tea either. He’s a class A certified jerk. You know Carter hates him.”

Jackson nods. Mom says, “Please think. We need to figure out why he’s set on taking Reagan’s business from her.”

Jackson looks surprised. “He’s still doing that? Even with Carter and Reagan’s relationship.”

I nod. “Sort of. Not as much, but I think we’d like to figure out why he was so hot for my company to begin with.”

Jackson thinks for a moment. “There’s nothing specific that comes to mind. No major incident. I honestly haven’t done much business with them since Carter’s grandfather passed. Why don’t I have Donna pull all the files tomorrow of any deals that would have involved Daulton Holdings? We can go through them and figure things out from there.”

Mom looks up at him and smiles. “Thank you.”

“Of course, sugar.” He kisses her on the lips and pulls her tight to him. Trevor looks at me and rolls his eyes.

All of a sudden, the front door flies open with the thud. Aunt Cass and Melissa, Jackson’s ex-wife, come stumbling through giggling.

Jackson stands, places mom back down, and looks at them. “Are you two trashed?”

They laugh uncontrollably. I smile at Trevor. He closes his eyes and shakes his head.

Mom asks, “Where are you guys coming from? I hope you took an Uber.”

Aunt Cass responds, “Of course we Ubered, mom. We were out for drinks with Melissa’s friends. They all love me.”

Melissa laughs. “They do love my new daughter-in-law.” They both start hysterically laughing again.

Mom jokes, “Melissa, are you trying to steal my best friend?”

Melissa looks at Mom. “Well, you stole my husband, so it’s only fair.”

We can almost feel the oxygen being sucked right out of the room. It’s all of a sudden incredibly quiet as everyone’s chins drop to the floor. What. The. Fuck. That’s not even true. They were divorced for years before my mom came into the picture, regardless, I can’t believe she just said that. My sisters and I look at each other in complete shock.

Melissa then bursts into laughter. “I’m just kidding. But the look on all your faces. Priceless.” She continues laughing.

Jackson motions to Hayden. “Take your mother upstairs to sleep it off. Put her in one of the guestrooms. Make sure she drinks water.”

He looks at Trevor. “You deal with your crazy wife.”

Aunt Cass winks at Trevor. “Come on, Secretariat, let’s go have some fun.”

Trevor smiles, but Melissa scoffs. “Ugh. I wish you never told me about that nickname. I can’t unhear it.”

Trevor sighs. “You told my mother why you call me Secretariat?”

Aunt Cass giggles as she nods her head. Melissa says, “Oh, please. I bathed you until you were sixteen. I know what’s up.”

Harley, Skylar, and I start hysterically laughing. I look at Trevor. “You let your mom bathe you until you were sixteen? You’re such a tool.”

He shakes his head. “More like six, not sixteen. Jeez, Mom, get it together.”
