“And does that include boiling people?”

The elevator doors opened and he stepped off. “Of course not.”

“Thank God.”

“It’s not like I carry around a barrel of acid with me.”

I glared at his back, then grabbed the guard by his arms and dragged him off the elevator. Leaning him up against the wall, I turned to Fox.

“I think he’s okay. We just have to get him—”

But before I could finish, Fox pulled out his tranq gun and shot the man in the neck. I watched as his body slowly slumped to the ground.

“So, we ready to do this?”

* * *

“Are you almost done?”

We’d already been in the office for ten minutes. I was surprised no one came up sooner since the guard was missing from his post. It wouldn’t be too much longer before someone came.

“Man, this guy is into some serious shit.” Fox was leaning over the keyboard at Michael’s desk, copying files to a flash drive for Rae. I had already searched the drawers of the desk, but came up with nothing.

I heard the elevators ding at the end of the hallway and ran to the door to check. “Fox, we’ve got company!”

“Give me a minute.”

“We don’t have a minute!”

I ran back over to the desk, watching as he pulled up the security footage. “They’ve got the stairwells and elevators covered.”

I watched as men swarmed off the elevator in various directions, thankfully not heading in our direction. The elevator continued up, leaving us no escape in that direction, not that riding the elevator was the best idea right now.

“The only way out is through the window.”

I grabbed him by the shirt and hauled him toward me. “I amnotgoing out the fucking window! I’m not in the military anymore. I’m not jumping out of a helicopter or a plane, and I sure as shit am not leaping out of an eighty-story building!”

“Alright, wow, calm down,” he laughed. “This is no big deal. I got this.” He slapped me on the cheek and laughed, stepping around me. He checked the hallway, then motioned for me to follow. This time, I reached down and grabbed the gun in my ankle holster. Like it or not, I’d chosen to come along with him, and now I had to do everything possible to defend myself.

He took off down the hall for the elevators. No one had come from the stairwell, yet, but it wouldn’t be long. He stopped and motioned for me to hurry up.

“Are you fucking kidding me? We’re taking the elevators?”

He scoffed. “Don’t be silly.” Then he pulled out a small tool and started prying open the doors. “Are you gonna help?”

I got my fingers in between the doors and started pulling. Between the both of us, it didn’t take long before we shoved them aside. I stared down into the abyss, feeling my pits sweat at the thought of falling.

“No, this is insanity.”

He grabbed me and pulled me to face him. “Have you ever seen the movieElf?”

I stared at him incredulously. “The Christmas movie?”

He nodded enthusiastically. “It’s like that, except instead of going to New York City, we’re going down this elevator shaft. And instead of spinning around in a door really fast, we’re sliding down these cables. Easy peasy!”

He pulled out a pair of heavy-duty gloves and slapped them to my chest. “Trust me on this.”

Shoving my gun in my holster, I pulled on the gloves and prepared myself for our exit. I was no stranger to cables, but hell, I thought I was through with this part of my life. He grabbed the cable and grinned at me before loosening his grip and sliding down. I made the sign of the cross on my chest, though I was never very religious, then grabbed the cable and started the long descent down to the basement. The air whooshed around me as I clung tight to the cable. The last time I had done this, I had more gear and at least a helmet in case I fell to my death. Not that a helmet would help me much in this situation.
