We were almost to the mouth of the alley when several men came rushing around the corner. On instinct, I fired off two shots, taking them both down immediately.

“What the fuck?” Fox shouted. “What are you doing?”

“I was protecting us.”

“You were jumping the gun! I didn’t even get to pull out my moves!”

“Then maybe you should be faster,” I said as I rushed over to the men and checked for a pulse. They were both alive, which I was grateful for. I might be getting back into the swing of things, but that didn’t mean I wanted to have blood on my hands.

“Christ, you’re checking to make sure they’re alive?” he snapped. “You’re the worst partner ever.”

“I can live with that.”

I peered around the corner of the building and swore, pulling back when I saw cops blocking off the road. Men were getting out of their vehicles, and they were headed right for us.

“Fox, we have a bit of a problem.”

“Yeah, uh…”

I spun around only to find Fox standing completely still with a gun pointed at his head. I slowly lowered my weapon, trying to think of a good way out of this.

“What are you doing?” he hissed.

“Trying not to get killed.”

“Nowyou decide to have a conscience,” he snapped.

“Relax, boys.” Rae stepped out from behind Fox with a smirk on her face. “That was way too easy. Seriously, Fox, I think you’re losing your touch.”

“It’s not my fault,” he hissed. “Cash threatened me.”

I heard the boots approaching and knew we didn’t have time to argue about this right now. Then men turned the corner and I slammed the butt of my gun into the first guy’s face. He dropped to the ground as I spun and slammed the other guy into the building. Rae took out the third guy and let him drop to the ground.

“We need a plan. We can’t just keep knocking out people. Eventually, they’re going to come looking for these guys.”

Rae nodded and jerked her head. “This way.”

But as we headed for the other end of the alley, a cop car stopped, blocking off the exit. Rae grabbed the door that was still propped open by the guard and jumped over him.

“Holy crap. What happened to not hurting anyone?” she asked as she stared around the room at the five guys on the floor.

“It wasn’t me,” Fox protested. “It was all lover boy. Blame him. And make sure you tell Cash it wasn’t me!”

She ignored him and ran over to the trash compactor at the far end of the room.

“What are you looking for?” I asked.

“Something to cause a distraction.”

I spotted some canisters in the corner and hauled one up. “Like this?”

“No,” Fox interrupted. “Cash said no explosions.”

“It’s not going to cause an explosion,” I said, tossing it into the compactor.

“You don’t even know what it is,” he argued. “It’s not labeled.”

“Relax. These are helium containers. The most that will happen is the canister will blow out. It’ll cause a big bang, but we won’t light anything on fire.”
