“Which is why we have to move on this.”

I hit the button for the elevator. As soon as it opened, Scottie, Fox, and I got in and headed upstairs.

“How the fuck did they even know where you were?” Cash asked.

“It’s Xavier Roth. We thought we lost him, but he has endless resources. He could have known where we were all along. That doesn’t matter right now, though. We have to get Duke back. The three of us can’t do it alone.”

“Start putting a plan together. We don’t have a lot of men here right now, but I’ll send whoever I can.”

“And you,” I insisted. “We may need your skills.”

“I’ll be there,” he said before hanging up.

The doors opened and we stepped out. My feet were hurting from running across concrete, but I shoved that away as I started to plan out how we were going to get Duke back.

“We need more weapons. What we have isn’t enough.”

“Hold on,” Scottie said. “Slow down. We can’t plan anything until we know where they took him.”

“And if they kill him between now and then?” I asked.

“That won’t happen. Duke’s a smart man. He knows not to give anything away.”

“They’re going to torture him,” I snapped.

“He wanted this,” Fox stepped in. “I saw him right before he let them take him. We were overrun with tangos. They had already tried to take him, but he shot the guy. If they were going to take him alive, it’s because they wanted answers.”

“So, you let him go?” I yelled at him.

He shrugged. “He knew what he was doing. You were fighting off multiple men. There’s no fucking way he was going to risk your life when they wanted him.”

“You should have fucking stopped him!”

“And then we’d all be dead. It’s easier to get back one man than to bring four people back from the dead. Then this whole trip would have been for nothing.”

The way he said it so nonchalantly had me ready to murder him, but his words repeated in my head.

He knew what he was doing.

There’s no fucking way he was going to risk your life when they wanted him.

He was purposely captured to save my life. My eyes burned with tears and I blinked rapidly, trying to hide them before Scottie or Fox could see.

“Ah, fuck. He broke her,” Fox sighed.

Too late. I brushed the tears as they slipped down my cheeks. Now wasn’t the time to get sentimental. I had to get Duke back.

“You really love this guy?” Scottie asked incredulously. “I thought you were just saying that shit to shut him up.”

“Why would I do that when I could just knock someone out?” I snapped. “None of that matters right now.” I took a deep breath and blew it out. “We need to find out where they’re taking him and plan a counter attack.”

“I hope the boss is bringing IRIS,” Scottie muttered.

“Ooh, I could call the Kamau,” Fox said excitedly. “I know he’s been dying to work a job with me.”

“He’s going straight, Fox. He’s not going to join us for a job.”

“I can still ask,” he said glumly.
