She sauntered over to me, putting as much sway in her hips as possible. “Like what?” she asked, blinking at me with those big eyes.

“Like a family,” I answered. That wasn’t entirely true. After what happened with Carolyn, I was in no rush to start a family, but it was the only thing I could think of to get her off my back.

But instead of the intended effect, her face lit up and she started purring as she sidled up to me. “Dukey, you should have said something.” She leaned in and whispered in my ear, “I’m very fertile.”

I shivered in disgust. I didn’t even want to know why or how she thought she was fertile. I grabbed her wrists and unwound them from around my neck. Luckily, Karen walked out with my food at that moment. I stood and grabbed the food, putting some distance between us.

Carly giggled, waving her fingers at me. “Call me, Dukey!”

I laughed nervously and backed out of the diner. Relief flooded me with every step I took toward the truck. I just landed myself in a sinkhole. Hopefully, she would think about it some more and realize she was nowhere near ready for a family. I didn’t want to keep telling her no, especially when it didn’t seem to get through to her.

When I arrived back at the house, it was still silent. I quietly unpacked the food and laid it out on the table, along with plates and silverware. I should have made the coffee before I left. Now I was scrambling to get it made before Rae got up. I felt like this was the morning after and my morning performance was on the line.

I stopped rushing around and took a deep breath. It didn’t matter what happened this morning. We weren’t dating or having sex. With that in mind, I went to wake her up. I shoved the door open with more force than necessary, but she wasn’t there. The bed was made and there was a note on my dresser.

You snore.

I scoffed, crumpling the note in my hand. She fucking left. I had enough food for a small army and no one was home to eat it. I pulled out my phone and texted Bowie. At least I knew he would appreciate my efforts. Within ten minutes, he was walking through the door with a grin on his face.

“So, how did it go last night?”

I waved my hand at the food, as if that was all that needed to be said. He narrowed his eyes at me. “Um…”

“She fucking left,” I snapped. “I woke up, went to get food, and when I returned, she was gone.”

“Harsh. Did she leave you a note or anything?”

“Yeah, it saidyou snore.”

He started to laugh, but covered it quickly with a cough. “Wow. So…did you make a move last night?”

“Are you kidding? She was injured!”

“Okay, what was the situation when you got in bed?”

“What do you mean?” I frowned.

“I mean, was there a wall between you or did you snuggle?”

I shook my head at the idiotic question. “I went to bed first.”

He hissed in a breath, shaking his head at me like I was pathetic. “You just left her out here by herself?”

“It was getting uncomfortable.”

“Well, no shit!” he snapped. “It’s supposed to be uncomfortable. That’s part of dating.”

“What kind of weird dates do you go on?” I asked.

“Look,” he said, storming over to me, “when you first meet a woman, you don’t know her intimately, but you want to. So, you’re thinking about getting in her pants, and she’s thinking about…the stars and if they’re aligned!”

“I just get in their pants,” I muttered under my breath.

“And yet you struck out with Rae,” he laughed.

“It’s different with her. I don’t want to just sleep with her.”

“Well, you failed there. You didn’t get to know her.”
