“That’s not what I’m talking about,” he said, narrowing his eyes at me knowingly. “You and Fox were the only ones that saw him on that plane, whether you’re sure of it or not,” he rushed on when I opened my mouth to contradict him. “For the rest of us, it’s not real yet.”

I snapped my mouth shut and let his words sink in. As much as I hated to admit to anything being difficult, digging for answers about the plane was harder than I expected. I kept thinking that if I found something to lead me to what happened, then I could put the image of him staring at me from the plane out of my head.

“Cash,” Eva said over the intercom. “You have a visitor.”

I wasn’t good with the touchy-feely stuff anyway, so this was a good opportunity for me to escape. I flung the door to his office open, only to come face to face with Duke. The last time I saw him was when I crept into his bed in the middle of the night. I woke up to my head on his shoulder and me wrapped in his arms. After that, I easily fell back asleep, but when I woke, he was gone. I’d been too chicken to answer any of his calls since then.

“Duke,” I said, walking around him.

“Rae—” He grabbed my arm, dragging me back to him. Normally, I would fight him off, but sudden flashes of the night I spent with him had me tripping over my own feet. The feel of his warm skin flush against my body, the way his breath huffed out in his sleep, and the way those blue eyes trailed over my body were just a few of the things that had me tied up in knots.

“I have to get back to work.”

“I tried to call you.”

“I’ve been busy,” I answered, quirking an eyebrow at him.

I didn’t do questions, ultimatums, or jealous boyfriends. Not that he was jealous or a boyfriend, but he certainly did a good impression of one. My eyes flicked to Cash’s office, desperate for him to come out and interrupt us. Instead, the door stayed practically shut, as if he was purposely staying away.

“And here I thought you were avoiding me,” he said, his face quirking up in a smile.

“Why would I do that?”

“Because you like me.”

I scoffed, averting my eyes from his beautiful face. “Sure, I like a lot of people. That doesn’t mean I want to spend an inordinate amount of time with—”

I gasped as he wrapped his arm around my waist and pulled me flush against him. All the humor from his face was wiped clean, replaced with a smoldering intensity that I rarely saw. Duke was full of humor and good times, but underneath that facade was a dominating man willing to go to any lengths to get what he wanted.

And that was currently me.

“Why won’t you look at me?” he asked, his breath fanning over my face.

I swallowed hard, doing my best to hold my composure. I never lost control; never let my badass temperament slip. I was a rock.

Except right now.

I pulled myself together and finally looked up at him. “Duke, what exactly do you want—”

His lips crashed down on mine, swallowing the words I was about to say. His hand slid up my back, cupping the nape of my neck as he pulled me closer. I was so lost in his touch that I actually ran my hands up his arms and allowed them to roam over his massive biceps.

I felt momentarily lost when he broke the kiss and stared into my eyes. I couldn’t think of a damn thing to say to him. All sanity left the building and only lust remained. It was a dangerous thing, especially around a man like this.

“You drive me fucking crazy,” he murmured. “I can’t get you out of my head.”

He rarely left my mind either. When I was at work, I could ignore thoughts that tried to push their way into the forefront of my mind and focus on the task at hand. But when I went home at night, I laid awake thinking about him.

My breath hitched as he ran his hand from the nape of my neck to my collarbone. But then the front door swung open and I jerked back. Just my luck, the blonde bimbo rushed in the doors, her gaze narrowing on Duke.

“Dukey!”

His audible groan sent shivers down my spine, but I quickly reminded myself who he was. He still hadn’t shaken the woman that relentlessly chased him. I knew this for a fact because I saw him in town often, and she was always chasing after him. Of course, I clung to the shadows, not wanting to run into either of them.

“Carly, what are you doing here?”

But she wasn’t looking at him. She was glowering at me, like I didn’t belong here. “Do you have a problem?”

“What areyoudoing here?”
