“Thanks,” I muttered.

“No, I mean, she was really busting your balls. I never thought you would be able to pull it off.”

I sighed, zipping up all the way. “Again, thanks for the vote of confidence.”

“So, how was it?”

“I’m not telling you that.”

“Why not?”

I stormed past him, refusing to say a thing. “Because first of all, I’m not in college, spouting about my amazing night in the sack.”

“So, it was amazing,” he grinned.

“And second…” My mind suddenly went blank as I tried to come up with the other reason. “I fucking hate you.”

He tossed his head back and laughed. “Man, I knew it would be good. Tell me, is she wild? I bet she’s wild.”

Fuck, she was wild as hell, but I wasn’t about to tell him that. “Can we get to work?”

“So, are you seeing her again?”

“Work,” I snapped.

“I wonder if she’s the type to stop by for nookie in the office?” he pondered to himself.

“Bowie! Get the fuck to work!”

“And if she’s not, maybe she’ll bring some food. You know, I’m tired of ordering from the diner, and it’s probably not the wisest idea after breaking things off with Carly,” he said as an afterthought. “You did break things off with her, right?”

I stared at the workbench guiltily. “I did,” I said hesitantly.

“Oh, shit. There’s a but in there.”

“She asked me to take her to a bar for her class reunion,” I said with a sigh.

“And you said yes?” he practically shouted.

“What the hell was I supposed to do?”

“A logical man would say no. Do you have any idea what you’re getting into? She’s going to show you off and tell everyone you’re in love and about to get married!”

“I laid down ground rules,” I argued.

“Yeah, and women always follow those,” he snorted. “You are so fucked, and if this gets back to Rae, she’s going to be so pissed. And then all this lovey-dovey attitude you have going on is shot to hell.”

I rubbed my hand over my face. This was exactly what I was trying to avoid—someone else pointing out what I already knew. “Look, it’s not that bad. I’ll talk with Rae and tell her this was arranged before we slept together.”

“Lying is never the right answer. Women have a way of weaseling information out of you.”

“Why would she even ask?”

“Oh, I don’t know. Because that will be the night she asks you to do something, and you’re going to have to lie. This is the way it goes, my friend. Just when you think it’s smooth sailing, it all blows up in your face. And if you think otherwise, you’re delusional.”

“No, it’s not like that. Rae’s cool.”

He huffed out a laugh. “Cool enough that she’s fine with you seeing another woman on the side?”
