He took her shoulders, the gesture as sensual as a naked caress. “You look like the professional you are, ready to communicate about a very serious situation. You’re going to be as brilliant at this as you are at everything else.”

She leaned up and kissed him on the mouth, humming at the taste of buttered bread on his lips. From now on, she would make sure they always had butter and bread in the house—because she had to taste him like this daily. “I’m not brilliant at everything. Let’s get that out in the open now. In case Sorcha’s right about the two of us.”

“She is,” he bandied back with a rakish grin, “and I know you’re not perfect.”

“You do?” She rounded on him and gestured to herself, amused. “Howam I not perfect?”

His laughter was the skin-sizzling kind. “Don’t you have to get to the arts center? Because I think you’re more than made up. You’re shining with light and so beautiful every person who watches your interview won’t be able to look away.”

Aw…

“Come on, I’ll drive you.”

“I have my car.” She narrowed her eyes. “Wait! You’re escorting me, aren’t you?”

He simply shrugged. “We’re going the same way. Call me a little overprotective where you’re concerned. After last night, anything is possible.”

She studied him. They’d all gone to bed late after the Garda had finished questioning Mary Kincaid and then taken her into custody. According to Ghislaine, she’d been charged with trespassing, malicious intent to private property, and threatening and abusive behavior.

Liam’s phone bleeped and he pulled it out. “That was fast. Aunt Mary’s lawyer showed up first thing and posted her bail. Guess where he’s from?”

Her diaphragm tightened. “Watertown.”

He gripped his phone. “Malcolm isn’t going to let her go down. We were wondering.”

She didn’t have to ask whom he meant by “we.” He’d left her at her door last night with a tender kiss and said he was heading over to his mother’s house with a few others to talk about the next steps. She’d weighed going, but given her early meeting with Ghislaine and complete lack of rest the night before, she’d gone with getting some sleep. Not that she’d slept like a baby. Tossing and turning seemed to be her new normal, and she’d looked longingly at her couch when she’d gone out to make herself a cup of tea at 2:05 a.m., wondering if she could sleep better there. Or if Liam was with her… Which only made her toss and turn for other reasons.

“What would you think about bunking here?” she made herself ask.

He pocketed his phone and put his hands on his hips. She could all but feel him reading her mind. This time she let him. Because yeah, she wasn’t stupid. Malcolm was dangerous, and she was the cause of his new set of troubles. He was going to strike back, and she didn’t want to think about how long it would take Wilt or the Garda to get to her if the alarm went off. Especially if Malcolm brought his own Garda with him like last time.

“I’d be happy to.” He paused for a moment. “This is where I want to be clear. We both know what’s between us, but I feel like this is more about you having someone you trust around so you can sleep better. Because I can see the fatigue around your eyes.”

“It is about that,” she managed, clearing her throat. “Although I’m close to being ready for the other. I’m just not sure which day it’ll be yet.”

His mouth twitched. “Which day, huh? I didn’t expect that kind of specificity,a stór. It will happen when it happens. We don’t need to rush anything. You trusting me like this feels like a victory.”

“It should. This whole string of events is totally abnormal for me.” She crossed to him and put his hand on her chest. “But since you’re the mind reader here, why don’t you tell me which day you see us taking this to the next level?”

“Taylor.”

His voice was so playfully sexy, she simply had to kiss him. Slow, sweet, and then a little more urgently.

“Maybe I want to know.” She fingered the collar of his pullover. “Sometimes it’s all I can think about. Especially when you have your hands on me.”

His chest rose with a deep intake of breath. “It’s the same for me. But I don’t see a date in my head. Only images.”

She touched her tongue to her teeth. “What kind?”

He fought a smile. “Are you going to make me say it?”

“Uh-huh.” She kissed him again on the mouth, caressing his chest in little circles she could feel was making his heart beat faster. “Tell me about them, Liam?”

He pulled her to his body, making her belly clench with heat. “They’re of us making love.”

“Are they hot?” she asked, smiling into his now fiery green eyes.

“More than hot,” he said, taking her bottom lip between his teeth softly and sucking it. “Cataclysmic. Mind-blowing. Earth-shattering. Like forget everything you thought you knew about sex because we’re at a whole different level.”
