“There you go, Bye Bye, putting words in my mouth. Would you listen, for once?” Unfortunately, the man had a point. I had been on guard with him for so long that I was starting to recognize times where he said something innocent, and I filtered it through my own lens of negativity and bit his head off over it.

I relaxed, loosening up a bit, trying to loosen up my mind as well. I rested my head on his again. His scent was soothing, and it was easier to talk like this when I didn’t have to look him in the eye.

“I’m listening.”

“There’s no denying we got off to the wrong foot when we first met.”

“No denying that.”

“I think over time we added fuel to the fire. Both of us.”

I aimed one eye down at him and squinted. “What’s going on here? Are you being mature?”

“What, an alpha can’t grow up?”

“Not one like you.” The look he gave me was tinged with hurt. Let’s try to do better, Byron. “I didn’t mean that. I...I’m sorry.”

“Incredible. The Byron the Giraffe has apologized to little old me. Somebody call the coast guard. Alert the historians, this is truly a noteworthy day.” He squeezed my waist and it tickled a little, getting a smile out of me.

I rolled my eyes, but I didn’t hide my grin. “Don’t get used to it.”

He pouted, and I hated to admit that it had gone from being annoying to pretty darn cute almost overnight. “What if I want to?”

“Don’t.”

He waggled a finger at me. “I think we’re getting somewhere, you and me.”

“It’s you and I,” I said, just to be contrary.

He shrugged and pulled me closer. “Same difference.” So it was romantic, so what? Being there on a date with my fated mate, who was turning out to be a much more evolved person than I had given him credit for, was special and something I never thought I’d get to experience.

Trevor wrapped his arms tighter around me, clasping both his elbows to lock his arms in place. Safety. That’s what I felt when I was in his arms.

“For the record, I’m sorry, too. I know I teased you a little back then, poked some fun at you.”

“Some? A little?”

“A lot, okay? I didn’t think about it, but maybe I hurt your feelings.” Why did he have to bring out the big guns?

I sniffed stubbornly, trying to keep up my tough facade. “Well, you did a few times. I’m a human being, after all.”

“I know. I poked fun at you about things that I actually think are really cool, like how smart you are.”

“Go on.” I extended my giraffe ear and twisted it toward him, which made him smile. It was cute, and made me warm inside.

“You always did so good in group projects. You were a take-charge omega and I really admired that.”

“I like where this is going.”

“If I may also respectfully say so, I didn’t start calling you Legs for no reason.” That brought on a whole different bodily sensation.Mate. Mine.

“Is that so?”

“Mm-hmm,” Trevor hummed absently. His fingers roamed from my waist to my hips, down the outside of my thighs. My eyes widened, but I made no move to stop him. His fingers trailed to the backs of my thighs, to my hamstrings. Just a little higher up, and he would have touched my now-pulsating entrance, preparing itself just for him.

“You always thought my legs were sexy?”

“Yup.”
