Chapter 4

Byron

Iwracked my brainday and night, trying to think up how I could come up with the money. Unfortunately, the show had to go on with the rest of my life, especially work. I had to keep the paychecks coming in.

As much as I hated to admit it, Trevor’s stupid social media site was useful for finding networking events, and for raising sales. I had an event already scheduled months in advance, long before I had any idea what would happen to my mom, and long before I had any idea I’d run into Trevor in the flesh.

“Yes, I do think the Dow is going to rebound within the next couple of months.” I was making small talk with a potential connection, nursing the glass of white wine I bought earlier in the night because I couldn’t afford to spend any extra money right now. I’d targeted a surgeon in Spain who was the best in the business and still one-third the cost of a US surgeon. I needed to pinch every penny and pray for a miracle to get Mom over there.

All of a sudden there was a commotion near the entrance of the event center conference room.

“What’s going on over there?” asked my compatriot, craning her neck to see what all the hubbub was about. A small crowd swarmed around something...someone. The person in the middle walked forward and the crowd moved with them, buzzing with excitement.

A familiar voice spoke from the center of the human vortex. “Thank you, thank you, everybody. Of course we can do a few pictures.”

Oh, my god. It was Trevor.

I grasped my thighs to keep myself from running over to join the circle, hell, to push through it and lay hands on my mate. He was mine, after all.Mine.

The lady I was talking to lit up when she saw Trevor. “He’shere? You gotta be kidding me.”

My voice came out small. “What a surprise.”

Trevor’s head swung to the right. His eyes connected with mine as if he had somehow known I was standing right there. Maybe he had. It seemed that we were attracting each other these days.Trevor, I need you.

When he saw me, he smiled like the leopard who caught the canary. He raked his eyes up and down my body, like they were peeling off each item of my clothing one by one. I straightened up and lifted my chin, ignoring the heat flooding my lower half. Two sides warred inside me; the side that wanted my mate near me, and the side that didn’t trust him.

Trevor held up his hands. “I have to excuse myself for a moment, folks.” The crowd let out a bunch of disappointed “aaw’s” like kids being called in from recess. “How about an open bar on me? Go enjoy yourselves and make this event a big success.” The crowd cheered then, happy to break up the huddle in the name of free liquor.

Trevor swaggered over to me, never taking his eyes off me. “There you are.” Was that affection in his voice?

I pointed to myself. “Were you looking for me?”

“Yup.”

“How in the world did you find me?”

“You said I could look you up.”

“And you...oh my god.” I let my head fall back. I had, after all, given the

CEO of a massive social media platform permission to find my profile onhiswebsite. It wouldn’t have been hard for him to find out which events I’d be attending.

He took my arm and led me away from the table. “Would you excuse us?” He asked the other guest, who nodded dumbly. “Thanks.”

I gave him my best side-eye, ignoring the tingle where he touched me. “I feel like there’s something weird about that.”
