Was it Frostbite, the female truck driver? Or the so-called man who’d been in the road?

Duke wasn’t sure.

But one could never be too careful out here. Even though he was a former investigator with the Army, some risks were inherent. This might not be the Middle East or teeming with terrorists, but beautiful Alaska had its own kind of danger.

Most people didn’t realize just how hazardous this highway could be.

Duke knew firsthand.

Celeste had disappeared from this road almost two years ago.

He swallowed the lump in his throat.

Even though people said he was foolish, Duke hadn’t given up hope he’d find her one day. It was one of the many reasons he’d started his tour business here.

His excursions kept him on this lonely road where Celeste had last been seen.

Setting those thoughts aside, Duke stomped back toward the cab.

He couldn’t stay outside long. The cold was too dangerous.

Just as he reached the door, it opened, and Frostbite bounced down to the ground.

“It’s going to be a while before a tow truck can get here,” she announced. “The bridge might be out.”

“Really?” Duke rumbled.

“Really.”

He sucked in several deep, icy breaths before asking, “Is anyone with you?”

As soon as he asked the question, he knew it was a mistake.

The woman’s expression tightened.

He’d asked if she was alone out here.

Probably not a good idea since the woman was already skittish.

“Just me,” she finally said, her finger curling as if she wished she held her gun.

“Why don’t you let me give you a ride?”

She studied him as if contemplating her answer. “I’m not fond of taking rides from strangers.”

“We’re in the middle of nowhere in a snowstorm, and there’s no one else around to ask for help. Who knows when another driver will be by here? It could be hours. You really want to be stuck out here with your rig all night?”

The woman scowled and rose to her full height—which couldn’t be more than five feet. “Now, do you really thinkanyonewould want to be stuck out here all night?”

He winced, but there was truth in her words. It had been a stupid question asked in a high-stake situation.

“I have two other people in the car with me, if that makes you feel better,” he finally said, determined to put her at ease.

The last thing he wanted to happen was for someone else to disappear from this haunted highway.

Frostbite raised an eyebrow, still cautiously observing him. “Depends. Are they in your car by their own free will?”

“What?” Duke wasn’t sure if she was joking or serious. “Yes. Of course.” His voice lilted before he corrected himself and brought his thoughts back into focus. “So what do you want to do?”
