The music had stopped.

What was going on in there? She heard footsteps. Heard a door opening. Heard something happening behind the church.

She tried to stay where she was, to honor Duke’s request that they remain where they were.

His request? She frowned.

More of a demand, really. But she was still trying to stay where she was.

“Andi . . .” Mariella looked up at her, not trying to hide the fear in her eyes.

Only moments earlier, Andi had seen her look into her camera and mutter something about a hair product.

Her timing left a lot to be desired.

But she’d quickly sobered when Duke hadn’t returned.

“I’m going to go check on him,” Andi said.

Ranger stepped forward. “I’ll go with you.”

A touch of relief filled her. “If we’re not back soon, then take the car and get out of here.”

The two of them hurried away before the twins could try to stop them.

They rushed through the church building. But no one was inside.

“He must have gone out the back,” Ranger muttered.

They ran that way, fearing Duke’s life could be in danger . . . again.

Outside, they began following the footprints in the snow.

Why didn’t they hear anything? Had Duke gotten that far away already?

Andi hoped she was making the right choice by coming out here.

Just as she was about to take another step, Ranger grabbed her and jerked her back. “I wouldn’t do that if I were you.”

She glanced down, and her head began to spin.

A pit sank into the snow.

“What . . . ?”

“Probably an animal trap,” Ranger said. “I’m surprised they were able to dig in the permafrost.”

Andi peered down, a frightening possibility forming in her mind. “Duke?”

A moment later, a hand thrust through the snow.

She sucked in a breath.

Duke!

Another hand appeared.

Duke was trying to dig himself out, wasn’t he?
