This was where it had all started.

All with that man in the road.

With the gunshots being fired.

With the road shutting down.

And it had turned into so much more than a road trip with disaster.

These last few days had reignited something inside. Something other than vengeance.

She’d felt a satisfaction that only came through helping others.

Duke turned toward her, something deep and tense glimmering like the Northern Lights in his eyes. “Is this goodbye?”

“I . . . I’m still not sure,” she admitted.

“You know. . .” His voice caught. “You can’t run away from your problems forever.”

His words caused a sudden spark to ignite inside her.

Duke thought he knew her so well. He didn’t know anything.

And she definitely didn’t want his advice about how to proceed. Or about letting go—something he clearly couldn’t do.

She wouldn’t let guilt guide her decisions—and his words had made her feel flooded with regret and shame.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.” Her words sounded terse, even to her own ears.

His gaze remained locked on her. “I can sense you’re harboring secrets.”

“As if I’m the only one harboring secrets . . .” Andi remained surprisingly calm, knowing if she could remain unemotional that she might walk away from this unscathed.

Duke raised his hands. “I didn’t mean any offense.”

“You’re just making a lot of assumptions here.”

“I apologize.”

He shrugged and shook his head in a way that just might look adorable . . . if Andi wasn’t irritated with him.

“I just don’t want to see you do something you might regret,” he continued.

“But you don’t even know me. How do you know what I might regret?”Push him away,an internal voice crooned in her ear.Getting close has only gotten you hurt in the past. Trusting no one is always the best plan.

They stared at each other for a moment.

Duke said nothing.

Maybe itwouldbe for the best if Andi put some distance between them. If she were honest with herself, she’d admit she had a growing attraction to the man. That wasn’t going to work. In his heart, Duke was still engaged, even if his fiancée might be dead.

Andi wasn’t going to remind him of that. If he wanted to keep hope alive, then so be it. Besides, maybe Celeste was still alive. What did Andi know?

She reached for the door handle.

Sometimes in life, hard decisions had to be made.

This was one of those times.
