“You stirred this up,” I muttered.

I’d gotten away with my crime for so long. No one had even given me a second look. I was a respected member of the community—one who’d been called to end the evil I’d seen in Henrietta.

Then this guy had to start digging.

“This is all your fault,” I whispered.

That’s what I’d told him as I stabbed him. This is all your fault. Each word accompanied another stab.

I pressed my eyes closed as I remembered confronting Craig.

When I’d come here, all I’d wanted to do was talk.

But then I heard him in his studio.

He was about to expose me on a live broadcast.

Craig was about to say horrible things about me.

And then . . .

Something barbaric inside me had taken possession.

Now, it was all over.

Craig was dead.

And I needed to cover up this crime. Get rid of any evidence. Find that deed.

I had to protect the life I’d created.

And no one was going to stop me.

No one.

“Are your garments spotless, are they white as snow?” I sang the words quietly as I made plans for what I needed to do.

I glanced at my clothes, which were now spattered with blood.

I needed to get rid of them.

I needed to be pure.

And I prayed I didn’t need to make any more sacrifices to become so.

Andi frozeas the gunshot echoed in her head.

“Get down!” Mr. Gallant yelled.

Andi didn’t have to be told twice.

She sank to the ground.

“We’ve got to get to my vehicle.” Mr. Gallant appeared beside her and nodded toward the headlights in the distance. “We need to make a run for it. Stay low!”

Andi nodded, in no position to argue.
