“Even if you’re able to find his house, it’s not smart for you to go there alone, Andi.” He glanced at the woman, waiting for her to refute his words.

Her eyes darkened as conclusions flashed in her gaze. “Because I’m a woman?”

And here we go again . . .

He resisted a sigh. “I’m sure you’re capable. But no one should go out there alone. We don’t know what to expect. Especially after what happened earlier.”

“Something happened earlier?” More worry saturated Simmy’s voice.

“Someone shot at us,” Andi said the words as if the incident was an everyday occurrence.

Simmy’s hand flew over her heart. “What?”

“I’ll fill you in later. We don’t have much time right now. The important thing is that everyone is okay.”

“I’m so glad . . .” Simmy’s lips flickered with a frown. “What’s going on out here?”

“That’s what we all want to know.” Mariella shrugged her eyebrows, her phone in hand.

He hoped she wasn’t recording any of this.

“I’ll go with you.” It was really the last thing Duke wanted to do, but he couldn’t let Andi go out there alone.

Besides, what if something had happened to this Craig guy? He might need help. There was no way Andi could lift the man—much less carry him—to the truck.

Andi twisted her head as she observed him unabashedly. “What if you’re a serial killer?”

“A serial killer? Duke’s no serial killer.” Simmy let out an airy chuckle. “Most people would say he’s a hero.”

Andi still eyed him as if she wasn’t convinced. But curiosity entered her gaze.

“We’ll take my vehicle.” Duke pulled his simmering gaze from Andi’s and turned back to Simmy. “You need to lock up behind us.”

“Why would I do that?” A knot formed between her eyes. “Lloyd won’t approve.”

He lowered his voice and stepped closer. “There’s a gunman out there, and this place is the closest location. I don’t want him getting inside. If anyone comes, they can ring the doorbell. Promise me you’ll do that. I won’t leave if you don’t.”

Fear glimmered in Simmy’s eyes. “Okay, I promise. But if someone comes while you’re gone, how can I turn them away?”

“They can stay in their vehicle until I get back. I don’t think we’ll be gone long. They should be okay.” He leveled his gaze with hers. “Got it?”

Simmy nodded. “Got it.”

That made him feel a little better . . . but danger seemed to be coming at them right now from every angle.

Several minutes later,Andi was back in the SUV with Duke.

They hadn’t had a chance to cover the back window, so they’d simply need to live with the cold wind and noise.

In the meantime, Duke cranked the heat, and warm air blasted from the vents.

As he waited for the car to warm, his phone dinged and he glanced at it, smiling.

A picture of some type of steak dish with fingerling potatoes and green beans filled his screen.

Not that Andi was looking.
