“You’re going to have to hold onto me,” Duke said over his shoulder as snow pelted them in the nighttime air.

Andi placed her hands at his waist.

Duke grabbed her wrists and folded her arms more tightly around him.

She hesitated at the closeness, but she knew this arrangement was purely practical.

Still, being this close to a stranger?

Not her preference.

Duke started the engine and then they zoomed away, the headlights illuminating the snow on the road in front of them. Blankets of icy precipitation continued to fall, making visibility terrible. Every once in a while, the white lifted momentarily.

Temperatures had dropped to twenty-five below with the windchill making it feel even colder. That mixed with the wind from the snow machine made this situation dangerous. At least, her skin was covered.

After several minutes, Andi turned her head and rested it on Duke’s back. Not because she was warming up to him—but because his broad shoulders blocked some of the wind.

Her thoughts continued to race as they sped toward the trading post.

She hoped Simmy was okay as well as Mariella and Matthew and anyone else who may be inside the building. She had no idea what kind of danger they were facing right now or how far this killer would go.

Duke slowed the snow machine, and a moment later, his SUV appeared on the side of the road.

A state trooper’s SUV was parked behind it.

Her heart pounded harder.

She prayed everything was okay.

But her gut told her it wasn’t.

Something about the scene . . . it didn’t feel right.

As they approached the vehicles, Andi braced herself for whatever they would find.

Duke slowed when he saw his SUV on the side of the road—along with the state trooper’s.

His spine pinched.

Why had the thief/killer just left it there of all places?

Probably to send a message.

And where was the officer right now? Still inside his vehicle? Writing a report maybe? Was his service down?

Duke eased the snow machine to a stop behind the vehicles and pulled his helmet off. “Let me take a look around and see what I can find out.”

Andi nodded and gave him a thumbs-up.

He climbed off the snow machine and tromped to the other vehicles. As he passed his SUV, he turned on the flashlight on his phone and peered inside. His blood turned cold when he saw the bobblehead doll there.

Duke paused as he observed it.

An angel.

Had this guy purposefully picked this bobblehead? If so, why?
