She tried to imagine what might happen next.

Maybe there would be an update on Craig. Maybe if she was lucky the police would track down who’d killed him.

But she doubted that would happen quickly.

And what about the trooper who’d disappeared? Where was he, and was he okay?

She had no answers to any of those questions.

Back in her regular life, Andi would probably jump into the middle of this. That was what she did as an attorney. Sure, some law firms had their own private investigators that they hired. But where she’d worked, it had just been her and Stockton.

They had searched on their own for evidence to prove their clients were innocent.

She’d become quite good at it.

Just like she was good in the courtroom.

Being a lawyer was all she’d ever wanted to do.

Yet somehow her life had been reduced to this. One day, she would prove she’d been set up. She would practice law again.

Victor’s image filled her mind. After finding Craig dead and then Bosch disappearing, she’d nearly forgotten about the man in the road. About being shot at.

Too much was going on.

But she wouldn’t forget about Victor. She still thought he might have something to do with her earlier ambush on the highway.

She would find every speck of evidence she could to ensure this guy didn’t get away with what he’d done and that he spent the rest of his life behind bars.

Simmy sat beside her, and Andi’s breath caught. She reached forward and squeezed her friend’s hand. “How are you?”

She shrugged. “I’ve been better. I’m just trying to hold it together for as long as I can.”

“If you ever need to talk . . .”

Simmy rubbed her cheek and nodded. “Thank you. The truth is, I moved here to find my father. I suspected it was Craig, but I needed to know for sure.”

“Did he know you were looking into it?”

She shook her head. “No. I didn’t know how to approach the subject. And now it’s too late.”

Andi squeezed her hand again. “I’m sorry.”

“You’ve got to help me figure out who did this to him, Andi.”

She flinched. “Me? You want me to help you?”

“You’ve got that drive in you. I can see it in your eyes. Duke also. The police aren’t going to have enough time to dedicate to this. I need . . . you.”

Andi shifted. “I’m not sure how much I can do.”

“Look how much you’ve already done.”

Andi chewed on her words, unsure what to say.

Before she could reply, Duke headed toward them. “Trooper Gibson just called. He’s here to look for Trooper Bosch. I’m going to meet him outside. Lock this door behind me. Keep it locked, and when I come back, I’ll ring the bell twice. Don’t open it unless you hear my voice on the other side. Everyone understand?”

Boy, he sure did sound bossy.
