“Is that right?” Duke raised an eyebrow.

“I’ll prove it.” She poured two cups, noting the thickness of the liquid. Then she hunted around the counter until she found a couple of chocolate mints, some creamer, and a bottle of chocolate syrup. A few minutes later, she had mint mochas.

Andi brought Duke his and handed it to him with a flourish. “Order for McCallister.”

He grinned, eyed the cup a moment, and then took a sip.

He nodded appreciatively afterward, as if he were impressed. “This is good.”

“There was a reason my friends in college called me the Convenience Store Barista.”

Duke studied her. “What college?”

She clamped down. She hadn’t meant to say that. She’d gotten carried away, she supposed.

“One down in Texas,” Andi answered quickly. She nodded at his computer, knowing she needed to change the subject. “So . . . what are you doing?”

Duke let out a breath before running a hand over his face. “I couldn’t sleep. I keep thinking about everything that happened.”

Andi took another sip of her coffee. “Me too. I feel like I’m one of these investigators from the podcast when I say this, but we have to figure out what Craig knew. This killer knows who we are.”

She thought for sure Duke would disagree.

Instead, he nodded. “I’m curious also. I’m not sure I’ll be able to sleep at night knowing this guy could be out here hunting you. Or me.”

Her throat tightened as his confirmation that she wasn’t crazy—the danger was real. “What do you propose we do about it?”

He turned his computer to face her. “I want to start by listening to all of Craig’s episodes. I want to make a list of suspects in the death of Henrietta Blanco. Write down all the clues.”

Andi perked, liking the way he was thinking. “That sounds like a good start.”

“Maybe something he’s already said will lead us to find some answers.”

“Us?” She hadn’t missed the fact he’d used that word.

A frown tugged at his lips. “Yes,us. I could use your help.”

She nodded as a rush of excitement swept through her. Researching . . . investigating . . . debating . . . those were all the things she did best.

Andi sat up a little straighter. “It sounds like we need to get busy.”

chaptertwenty-nine

Three hours later,Duke and Andi had listened to all seven episodes.

They’d both made their own list of pertinent information to share with each other.

As they’d listened, Andi had moved some of the international “hello” signs from the wall beside them and started a temporary murder board.

As Duke listened to the details about the case, his interest grew.

The police had literally zero leads. Henrietta’s husband had been out of town. The teenage kids had all been accounted for. The younger kids had slept through their mom’s murder.

The nearest neighbor lived ten miles away. No one had cameras to capture passing vehicles on the road.

Talk about a dead end.

At first, Craig thought the murderer might be the husband, but Craig had quickly learned the police had ruled Henry out.
