Takeus? Since when was she going along with him?

Ranger stared at both of them a moment before grunting again. “I’ll take you. He probably won’t talk to you unless I’m there anyway.”

“Are you guys sure this is a good idea?” Simmy asked, a worried expression on her face.

“We’ll be careful,” Duke answered. “Plus, we need to figure out what’s going on. The longer this draws on, the longer we’re going to be in danger.”

Mariella’s eyebrows rose as a touch of fear filled her gaze. “Wait . . . we’re not safe?”

Duke motioned for her to lower her voice. The troopers were close and could hear this conversation.

“Relatively speaking,” Duke muttered. “Anytime there’s a killer on the loose, everyone’s safety is at risk. Anyone who tells you otherwise is lying.”

Before their conversation could continue, Gibson stepped toward them. They all straightened, almost as if he were a teacher coming close to observe his students.

“Just wanted to give you guys a quick update,” Gibson continued. “My guys are going to continue searching for Bosch.”

“We hope you find him soon.” Simmy patted his arm. “I’ve been praying.”

“I hope we find him soon also.” Gibson glanced at the murder board before turning back to Duke. “Just for the record, we don’t approve of civilians getting involved in our investigations. But considering your background . . .”

Duke felt like everyone’s eyes were on him at that statement.

The only other person here who knew what he used to do for a living was Simmy. That was how he wanted to keep it.

But he wasn’t sure that would be possible.

Especially when it came to Andi.

The woman was too sharp for her own good.

Duke cleared his throat, wanting the attention off him. “We’ll be careful.”

But it was only a matter of time before the group around him began trying to dig into Duke’s background . . . and that was the last thing he wanted.

But considering your background. . .

Andi reflected on Gibson’s words. What hadthatmeant? What kind of background did Duke have?

She remembered again that Simmy had called him a hero.

He must have had another career before being a tour guide.

Every once in a while, as she watched him, Andi thought she saw the soldier in him emerge.

Did he have some type of military background? He carried himself that way. She’d dated an Air Force pilot for a while in college, so she knew the type. There was something about him that seemed very All-American, boy next door . . . only with a side of GI Joe hunkiness.

Her gaze lingered on him a moment longer.

Maybe she’d find out more about Duke later.

For the moment, this whole group that had been thrown together fascinated her.

This morning, as Andi had observed Gibson with his jacket off, she’d confirmed that yesterday’s observations were correct. The man had numerous tattoos on his arms. Though he was in cop mode, something about him still screamed that there was a rebellious bad boy hiding beneath that uniform.

If she had to guess, he liked to drive motorcycles in the summer when the weather allowed. And he probably had his fair share of women clamoring for his attention.
