“This is all your fault?” Duke exchanged a look with Andi, who was turning paler by the moment. “Anything else?”

“Here’s where it gets creepy. Afterward, I’m certain I heard someone humming. This is only a guess, but I think this person was humming as he cleaned up after his crime.”

Duke’s heart pounded harder as a more complete picture formed in his mind. “Could you tell what he was humming?”

“I can’t be absolutely sure because I haven’t been to church in years. But something about the tune . . . it reminded me of an old hymn.”

When the call ended,Andi stared up at Duke, a shiver racing through her. “An old hymn? That’s creepy.”

Duke’s jaw tightened. “I agree.”

Her thoughts continued to race forward as a storm of questions formed. “Does that discovery indicate the person who did this was religious?”

Duke shrugged stiffly. “Maybe. Or maybe they’re not currently religious but maybe they were.”

“The Blancos were very religious.”

“So maybe we could look into people they went to church with,” Duke suggested.

“That seems like a good idea. But I think that we should still talk to Joe Prospector first.”

As Ranger stepped out, Andi caught a glimpse of Obadiah again. He stood at the door, ushering Ranger out with an almost impatient glint in his eyes.

She wanted to catch Obadiah before he went back inside. “One more question.”

His expression constricted as if he didn’t want to talk anymore. “Okay . . . but just one.”

“Can you tell me about the church you attended while growing up?”

He remained stony-faced a moment before saying, “There aren’t many churches out here. Our village started one, even built a building on the back of my parents’ property. There were probably less than a hundred of us, but we had some good times together. Became like family.”

“Is there anywhere I can get a list of the people that went to church with you?” Duke asked.

That was a great idea, Andi mused.

“I’m sure I can throw something together.” Obadiah shrugged. “I know at least a couple of the families are still around here. They were good people.”

“I’m not saying they weren’t good people,” Duke said. “But one of them could have answers, and that’s what we are looking for.”

Obadiah offered another stiff, almost hesitant nod. “Okay. I have Ranger’s number. I’ll text him the names. But right now, I need to feed my dogs.”

With another wave, they began their trek back to the SUV.

They would head to Coldfoot next.

Andi wasn’t afraid of going to the town.

She just knew that the place wasn’t very large, and the chances of running into Skeeter . . . they increased exponentially if she was there.

Whenever she thought about Skeeter, her apprehension rose. The man just gave her the creeps. One day, he was going to put her in a situation where she had to make a decision—hurt or be hurt. She’d already had to defend herself against him on more than one occasion.

However, Andi wasn’t going to let Skeeter stop her from doing anything.

One day, if he got too close again, Andi would put that man in his place . . . again.
