“Six sent me a copy of the list that you found on him. There’s a pattern there,” Hunter said. “And it makes me uneasy.”

“Why, because your pet lawyer has another target on his back?” Jericho asked, his lips slanting. He stirred his coffee, making sure the caramel had melted properly.

“Becauseyou’reon there,” Hunter replied dryly.

“As Warren,” Jericho dismissed. “I’m not worried.”

“There are question marks.”

Jericho took a long sip as he thought about the names that had been listed. “They think Dane Howell and Errol Derrick are still alive. Guess that hasn’t gone through the grapevine yet?” Which made sense. While George had died after Howell and Derrick had, it had only been by an hour or two at the most.

“The bodies have been given to Mav; no one will ever know what happened to them.”

That was the least of their problems. “They targeted your lawyer for a reason. Whatever that reason is, could whoever it was that did this want the same thing?” The idiots had been gunning for Devlin for a reason that they hadn’t managed to work out yet. Jericho had only been with their organisation for a few months, and they’d been tight-lipped about a lot of things. It was the only smart thing they’d ever done, and it was one that had made his job difficult.

“I’ve sent Spencer and Kendrick to Melbourne to see what they can find. We can see what they dig up. Hopefully, some concrete answers.”

Made sense. Kendrick was a master at sniffing out the truth, and Spencer could convince a fish it not onlycouldride a bicycle but desperately wanted to. If there was something to be found in the dark corners of that city, they would find it.

Hunter leaned back in his chair, and Jericho didn’t like the look on his face. “I want you on him.”

“You want me on… who?”

“Sebastian.”

Jericho jerked back in surprise. “I’m not abodyguard.” The fuck? Hell no.

“The rest of the team are busy, and we need to keep him alive. He’s an important asset, and he could be the key to working out whatever the fuck is going on.”

Footsteps signalled the emergence of Olivia. She was carrying her backpack, which was almost as big as she was. She dropped it beside the table, grabbed out her green, plastic book folder, and then scrambled up onto Jericho’s lap. “Uncle Coco, will you sign my diary?” she asked.

Jericho winced when a knee hit a sensitive section of his inner thigh as she got comfortable.

She flipped open the folder and pulled out the book she’d been reading earlier during breakfast and then her small A5 diary that was covered in rainbow, mermaid, and skull stickers. “Here.”

Hunter cleared his throat. “Jericho.”

Jericho clenched his jaw, a muscle twitching, as he signed today’s date in Olivia’s diary and wrote the name of the book she’d read. “Fine,” he said to his brother, referring to the bodyguard bullshit. “But you owe me.” As if they had a choice. He hoped they got this over with sooner rather than later, so he could get back to some kind of normal. He hadn’t even been home a week.

“You want me to take you out on a nice date?” Hunter asked with a wry smile.

“Can I go on a date?” Olivia asked, her eyes brightening as she climbed to stand on Jericho.

“Sure, Vee,” Hunter said. “You can wear your favourite dress-up outfit, and we can take you somewhere nice for your very own date.”

“My pirate outfit?” she asked. Jericho hadn’t thought it possible for her eyes to get any brighter, but he was wrong. She jumped on his legs, and he hissed.

“Sit down, Vee,” Hunter said. “I need Coco intact for a job he needs to do.”

“Work isn’t any fun,” Olivia said.

“You’re absolutely right,” Jericho said.

Bodyguard duty. Christ. That sounded as exciting as watching paint dry. Jericho had never had anything to do with any of their assets. Hunter coordinated all of that and kept the gears moving. Jericho preferred to get his hands dirty, not his mouth.

What did a lawyer even do all day? Push papers around, look smarmy, and drink coffee? There was a reason that Jericho steered clear of suits.

“Uncle Coco, watch,” Olivia said, jumping out of his arms and onto the floor. He had no clue what he was watching, but she was having fun tumbling around on the floor.
