She reached for his shirt, ripping it out of his waistband, her movements jerky, born of a desperation to be naked with him.

He took over, yanked his shirt over his head and shucked his jeans.

Shelby shimmied out of her jeans and panties and kicked them to the side. Then she took his hand and led him to her bedroom, where they fell into bed and made love so tenderly. Shelby’s heart swelled with emotion.

When they lay spent in each other’s arms, Shelby sighed. “Like that.” Her stomach rumbled.

“Hungry?” Remy asked.

“I am,” she said, not making a move to get up.

“I’m going to get a shower, then I’ll cook something for dinner.” Remy leaned over her and kissed her. “You could join me.”

“I could if I had any bones left in my body. I think they’ve all melted.” She smiled up at him. “You do that to me.”

“Mmm…” He kissed her again. “I’m good like that.”

“Yes, you are.” She cupped the back of his neck and pulled him back down for another kiss. “Get the water warm, and I’ll join you.”

“Deal.” He rolled off the bed onto his feet and headed for the bathroom.

Shelby’s gaze followed his sexy, naked butt.

“I could get used to this,” she murmured.

“Did you say something?” Remy called out from the bathroom as he turned on the water.

“Is it warm yet?” she answered.

Shelby heard the ping of a text message received on her cell phone in the other room. She rose, wrapped a robe around her body and walked into the living room where she’d left her cell phone.

LaShawnda had sent a message to her and Remy.

Left a gift basket on your porch. Don’t leave it outside long. Some of it is edible. Thank you for your business.

Curious, Shelby crossed to the front door, twisted the knob and pulled before she remembered she had to unlock the deadbolt as well.

She twisted the lever, smiling as she did, thinking, Nothing says love like installing a deadbolt.

Did Remy love her? Or was he just doing his job as a protector?

Shelby was almost certain it was too soon to know, at least on his part. She’d always loved Remy. First, as a childhood crush. Now, she loved him with all her heart and soul.

He might take a little longer to come to the same conclusion. She was willing to wait.

Shelby pulled open the door and frowned.

Lissette stood there with a basket in her arms, wearing the same orange outfit from earlier. “Hey, Shelly, I found this on your porch and thought you might want me to take it inside.”

“What are you doing here?” Shelby demanded.

“Just wanted to pay my favorite deputy a visit. Is there any law against that?” She stepped forward. “Aren’t you going to invite me in?”

Shelby planted herself in Lissette’s way. “No. I’m not going to invite you in. Give me the basket and go home.” When she reached for the basket, Lissette pulled it away.

“I really need to talk to you,” Lissette said, her brow furrowing.
